USC’s Flores Named Player of the Week

OREGON STATE’s Moore Selected Pitcher of the Week

SAN FRANCISCO - USC infielder Dante Flores has been named Pac-12 Player of the Week and OREGON STATE right-handed pitcher Andrew Moore has been tabbed Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week, the Conference office announced Monday.

Flores, a senior from Norwalk, Calif., had an outstanding week as the Trojans went 3-1, including a weekend sweep of the Dodger Stadium College Baseball Classic where they defeated No. 7 TCU 7-6 in 12-innings, No. 1 Vanderbilt 7-6, and No. 6 UCLA 8-4 at Dodger Stadium. Overall on the week Flores went 7-for-16 with three runs scored, two doubles, one home run and three runs driven in. Against TCU, Flores went 3-for-3 with one run scored, one double and one sac bunt. Then on Saturday against Vanderbilt, Flores went 1-for-4, with his one hit being a towering home run off the scoreboard in right field. At Dodger Stadium on Sunday against rival UCLA, the second baseman went 3-for-5 with one run scored and one RBI. Flores came through in the seventh inning of that game with his second hit of the day, launching one off the top of the wall in right field, for a stand-up double. He drove in one run and came around to score as the Trojans broke open the game up to make the score 8-4. The Trojans are now 15-1 on the season, their best start since 1988.

Andrew Moore, a junior from Eugene, Ore., had the finest start of his career in the opening-game of the Beavers’ series with Fresno State, a game OSU eventually won in 11 innings. Moore, who did not figure in the decision, went 10 innings, throwing 112 pitches. He allowed three hits and a run while tying a season-best with 10 strikeouts. He did not allow a baserunner until the fourth inning, when the Bulldogs collected two of their three hits off him, and their only run. He allowed just two base-runners after the fourth, one on a single in the fifth and one on a walk in the ninth. Eight of his 10 strikeouts came from the fifth inning on, including striking out the side in the ninth. Fresno State got its leadoff batter on against him just twice. In 30 and two-thirds innings this season, Moore has 31 strikeouts to just three walks and opponents are batting .168 against him.

USC hits the road tomorrow to play UC Irvine in Irvine at 6:30 p.m. PT. The Beavers will also play tomorrow night, and they will host Portland at 5:35 p.m. PT.
