ST LOUIS, Mo.—Arizona State wrestling's redshirt junior Blake Stauffer, the No. 3 seed at 184 pounds, went 1-1 on the opening day of the 2015 NCAA Wrestling Championships on Friday at the Scottrade Center.
Stauffer opened the day with a 4-1 decision victory over Michigan State's John Rizqallah, but then fell in the second round to Penn State's No. 14-seeded Matthew McCutcheon in sudden victory, 3-1. Stauffer is now 32-2 on the season.
In the Friday morning session, streamed live on WatchESPN, Stauffer will take on Illinois' Lazarus Reyes in the wrestle-backs bracket.
Also for ASU, junior Ares Carpio dropped his opening bout to the No. 12 seed at 125 pounds, Edinboro's Kory Mines in a 10-5 decision, and then fell to Lehigh's Scott Parker in a 9-5 decision in the first round of consolation competition. A first-time NCAA qualifier, Carpio finished the 2014-15 season at 16-14, with a 4-8 mark in duals, 2-3 in Pac-12 action.
At 141 pounds, junior Matt Kraus dropped a 5-1 decision to No. 10 seed Zachary Horan of Central Michigan, and was then pinned by Appalachian State's Mike Longo in the first round of consolation competition in 4:12. A first-time NCAA qualifier, Kraus finished the 2014-15 season with a 20-10 record, with a 5-7 mark in duals, 2-1 in Pac-12 matches.
No. 10-seed redshirt freshman Christian Pagdilao was edged in his opening bout, falling to Rutgers' Kenneth Theobold, 6-5, and then dropped a 13-2 major decision to Drexel's Matthew Cimato in the first round of consolation competition. A first-time NCAA qualifier, Pagdilao wraps his opening season with the Sun Devils at 21-5, 9-1 in duals and 4-0 in Pac-12 bouts.
Sophomore Oliver Pierce dropped his opening bout at 157 pounds in a 9-0 major decision to No. 2 seed Brian Realbuto of Cornell, and then withdrew via injury default in the first round of consolation competition. A first-time NCAA qualifier, Pierce finished the season at 19-8, with a 9-4 in duals, and 2-2 in Pac-12 matches.
At 174 pounds, redshirt junior Ray Waters was pinned in his opening bout by No. 15 Santiago Martinez of Lehigh, and then was edged by NC State's Pete Renda in a 5-4 decision. A first-time NCAA qualifier, Waters wraps 2014-15 with a 19-10 record, 10-3 in duals and a 4-0 mark in Pac-12 bouts.
