Men?s Golf Looks to Finish Strong

STANFORD, Calif. – The Washington State University men’s golf team fell three spots, Friday, in second-round action of The Goodwin at Stanford University Golf Course. The Cougars finished the afternoon 5-over (285), bringing their two-round total to 562 (+2). WSU is currently tied with Saint Mary’s for ninth place in the 24-team field. WSU sits ahead of Pac-12 foes No. 8 USC (+7, 567) and No. 37 Colorado (+26, 586), and one stroke back from Santa Clara (+1, 561) in eighth place.

WSU redshirt-senior Sang Lee paced the Cougars in the round, carding a 1-under 69. After shooting 1-over, Thursday, Lee sits even with par through two rounds and is tied for 26th place. The redshirt-senior carded six birdies on the day, and finished 1-under on the back nine.

For the second-consecutive day, senior Michael Anderson carded an eagle on the par-70 course. After notching a three-stroke eagle on the No. 7 hole, Thursday, Anderson returned to the green, Friday, sinking a second eagle on the 539-yard hole. Anderson (+2, 142) finished the second round 2-over (72) and is currently tied for 49th.

“Today wasn’t as strong as Thursday,” WSU Head Coach Garrett Clegg said. “We got off to a slow start and struggled to build momentum. At times, we showed chances of having a good round, but we left some shots on the course and couldn’t overcome the slow start. We are still in a good position, and we’re looking forward to coming back tomorrow and having a solid final round.”

Junior Bhurinat Songpaiboon carded the second-best score of the day for the Cougars. Songpaiboon notched back-to-back birdies on the final three holes to save par (70) and bring his two-round total to 142. The junior is tied with Anderson for 49th place. Sophomore Nick Mandell also sits tied for 49th place at 2-over (142). After a strong first round, Mandell struggled to find his rhythm, Friday, finishing the round 4-over (74). Freshman Derek Bayley carded a 77 (+7) in the second round. Coupled with a first-round 68 (-2), Bayley is currently tied for 69th (+5, 145).
