Moore and Rose earn baseball's weekly honor
SAN FRANCISCO—UTAH's Jayson Rose, after striking out 11 and UCLA's Ty Moore, after driving in nine, were named the Pac-12 Conference's Pitcher and Player of the Week. Rose was also named to Collegiate Baseball's honor roll for top players of the week.
Rose, a freshman from Alpine, Calif. and Granite Hills High, went the first 6.0 innings against No. 14-ranked California, giving up two runs (one earned) on three hits, walking none and striking out a career-best 11. Cal is one of the top offenses in the Pac-12, entering this week batting .295, third-best in the conference, while scoring the Pac-12's second-most runs. Rose had struck out 21 previously over his first six starts. Rose is 2-3 with a 4.00 ERA this season.
Moore drove in runs in each of UCLA's four games this past week, including the difference maker in the 13th inning at San Diego State last Tuesday, a three-run homer. As part of the weekend sweep of Washington State, the junior from Mission Viejo, Calif. and Mater Dei High, drove in three more in the Sunday finale, going 2-for-4. Moore ranks seventh in Pac-12 batting this season (.384), sixth in on-base percentage (.466) and fourth in RBIs (27).
NATIONAL RANKINGS: In Collegiate Baseball, six teams are in the top-20-- UCLA (21-5) is up to No. 5, Arizona State (18-7) remains at No. 9, California (20-7) moves up to No. 12, Arizona (22-6) jumps to No. 13, USC (22-6) is at No. 15 and Oregon State (21-7) is at No. 18. Baseball America has USC at No. 8, UCLA at No. 9, Arizona State at No. 11 and Cal at No. 21, all rankings similar to last week.
PAC-12 STANDINGS: Following three weeks of the play, UCLA (8-1), winners of eight-straight, have a one game lead over Arizona (7-2), California (7-2) and Arizona State (7-2).
INSIDE THE NUMBERS: Arizona, with a .332 average continues to lead the Pac-12 in batting as Scott Kingery (.453) and Kevin Newman (.426) rank 1-2 in average… Cal's Lucas Erceg has a Pac-12 best eight homers, homering in five-straight Pac-12 games, a streak that ended Sunday… UCLA's staff has produced a Conference-best 2.32 ERA, striking out 240 over 237.0 innings as James Kaprielian (55) and Griffin Canning (45) rank 1-3 in the Pac-12 in strikeouts.
