PULLMAN, Wash. – Washington State Football held its second scrimmage of the spring Saturday afternoon, working through 109 plays at Martin Stadium.
The Cougar offense passed for 10 touchdowns, ran for one while the defense tallied three sacks and forced three turnovers led by sophomore cornerback Marcellus Pippins’ two interceptions.
Redshirt-freshman quarterback Peyton Bender shared the spotlight with Pippins tossing six touchdowns (5, 22, 6, 29, 35, 10) while going 21-of-28 for 266 yards. Redshirt-sophomore quarterback Luke Falk threw two touchdowns (13, 8) while completing 25-of-35 pass attempts for 197 yards and also rushed for one touchdown (1). Bender and Falk were both picked off by Pippins. Freshman Tyler Hilinski completed 10-of-19 for 121 yards and two touchdowns (36, 20) while redshirt-sophomore Connor Ennis went 4-of-6 for 31 yards.
Wideouts redshirt-freshman Kyrin Priester and redshirt-junior Gabe Marks each caught two touchdowns while redshirt-freshman receiver D.J. Thompson caught three passes, all three for touchdowns. Preister led the way with eight receptions for 98 yards, sophomore wideout Calvin Green caught seven passes for 91 yards including a 10-yard score while Marks also tallied seven catches for 85 yards. Redshirt-senior Dom Williams finished with six receptions for 36 yards, junior John Thompson finished with five catches for 69 yards and a score and redshirt-freshman Zaire Andre made a leaping 35-yard touchdown catch late in the day.
Redshirt-freshman running back Keith Harrington led the way on the ground with six carries for 50 yards in addition to catching five passes for 42 yards. Redshirt-sophomore Gerard Wicks rushed five times for 26 yards highlighted by a powerful 19-yard run up the middle and through a couple defensive backs.
Pippins led the defense with two interceptions along with his team-high six tackles including two for loss. Redshirt-junior linebacker Paris Taylor add five tackles and the Cougars received sacks from redshirt-freshman Hercules Mata’afa, redshirt-freshman Chandler Leniu and redshirt-junior Reggie Coates.
Washington State continues spring practice Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. on Rogers Field and in Martin Stadium.
