PHOENIX – Fifth-ranked Sun Devil Baseball jumped out to a five-run lead through the first two innings and never trailed in a 6-3 win against Tennessee Tech on Friday night at Phoenix Municipal Stadium in Phoenix.

Starting right-hander Seth Martinez (2-0) allowed just one hit through the first four innings and retired eight in a row at one point to earn his second win of the season. He stuck out six and allowed three runs, including just one earned, on five hits and a walk in five innings.

Shortstop Colby Woodmansee drove in three runs on three singles, including one in each of the first two innings, and center fielder Johnny Sewald and second baseman Andrew Snow each tallied a pair of hits for the Sun Devils (27-11).

Right-hander Eder Erives took over in the sixth and held the Golden Eagles (19-20) scoreless across a career-long 3 2/3 innings. He retired the first six batters he faced, including three strikeouts, and scattered just two hits and a walk. Fellow right-hander Eric Melbostad (3) replaced Erives with two outs in the ninth inning and a runner on second. He walked the first batter he faced and made a throwing error in the next at-bat to load the bases, but induced a groundout to register the save.

The Devils scored three runs on two hits in the bottom of the first inning to take an early 3-0 lead. Sewald reached base on a fielding error to lead off the frame and left fielder Jake Peevyhouse walked before Woodmansee drove in the first run of the game with a RBI single through the left side. A pair of RBI groundouts by designated hitter Brian Serven and third baseman David Greer, respectively, cleared the bases and extended ASU's lead to three.

Catcher Zach Cerbo and Snow opened the second inning with a pair of singles and scored on RBI singles from Sewald and Woodmansee, respectively, as ASU tacked on two more to stretch its advantage, 5-0.

The Golden Eagles cut their deficit to a pair in the fifth inning as they notched three runs on four hits. Designated hitter Ryan Flick led off with a double, and a fielding error and three RBI singles resulted in a three-run rally before Martinez issued a swinging strikeout to end the frame.

Woodmansee added an insurance run in the eighth inning with a RBI single to right-center field. He leads the team with 17 multi-hit games and nine multi-RBI games.

TTU starting right-hander Chris Chism (6-2) took his second loss of the season after he allowed five runs, including three earned, on eight hits in seven innings.

Notes
Sewald has reached base in 20 consecutive games.
