STANFORD – Thomas Joyce added another milestone to his outstanding junior year Saturday, winning section 2 of the 5000 meters at the Payton Jordan Invitational in 13:34.42 – the No. 2 time in school history.
Joyce, who set a Cal record in the 1500 meters at the Big Meet (3:39.43) and captured the Don Bowden Mile in 3:58.69 at the Brutus Hamilton Invitational last month, now ranks behind only Belota Asmerom’s 2001 school mark of 13:31.88.
During his race, Joyce outlasted a pair of runners from Syracuse, edging Justyn Knight by less than half a second and finishing just over a second ahead of Martin Hehir.
Joyce was not the only Golden Bear victor on the day as Peter Simon captured the shot put with a mark of 57-7.75 and Brenden Song took the discus with a lifetime best of 188-2.
Eugene Hamilton III (1:48.90) and Josh Lewis (1:50.73) both set PRs in the 800 meters, as did Ellis Newton (3:48.66) and Garrett Corcoran (3:49.61) in the 1500.
For the women, Victoria Rische in the pole vault (12-9.50) and Ginika Iwuchukwu in the shot put (46-10.75) placed second in their respective events.
