T&F?s McBride Named Pac-12 Athlete Of The Week

TEMPE, Ariz.—Arizona State track and field’s redshirt senior high jumper Bryan McBride was named the Pac-12 Men’s Field Athlete of the Week for his school record-breaking performance at the Duel In The Desert, the conference announced on Monday.

A native of Peoria, Ariz., McBride broke the 38-year-old record on Saturday as he cleared 2.30m (7-6.50) in the final home meet of his Sun Devil career. The defending NCAA Outdoor Champion in the event made the bar on his second attempt, and decided to close out his day with the make. Kyle Arney set the original record in 1977 at 2.29m (7-6.00), which McBride matched at the Drake Relays on April 24.

McBride also won the long jump with an outdoor personal best of 7.51m (24-7.75) and took second in the triple jump at an outdoor best 15.47m (50-9.25). His 13 total points scored help the ASU men to a 92-71 victory over Pac-12 rival Arizona.

This marks the first weekly conference accolade of McBride’s career, and he is the second Sun Devil to pick up the honor this season. On March 30, fellow defending NCAA Champion Shelby Houlihan was named the Pac-12 Women’s Track Athlete of the Week.

McBride and the Sun Devils will be back in action on May 16-17 at the 2015 Pac-12 Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Los Angeles, hosted by UCLA.
