Junior College Success at Sun Devil Football

Junior College Success at Sun Devil Football

Sun Devil football has had much success in recruiting junior college players through the years. With the selection of Brandon Aiyuk as the 25th pick in the 2020 draft, ASU has now had two junior college first round draft picks in the past six seasons, as Damarious Randall went to the Green Bay Packers in the 2015 with the 30th pick.

Below are some of the notable junior college signees and notes and numbers in the past two decades.

--Past NFL picks include Erik Flowers (a first-round pick in 2000) and 1997 Sun Bowl Defensive MVP Jeremy Staat, and one can even go back a bit further to current Senior Associate Athletic Director Jean Boyd, who came to ASU in January of 1991 after transferring from Cerritos College. Boyd was named the National Associate of Academic Advisor Athletes' Lan Hewelett Award winner -- given to the top academic professional as voted by his/her peers -- in the summer of 2012. Boyd has undergraduate and Master's degrees from ASU.

--Also prior to 1995, Phillippi Sparks -- also now known as the father of Jordin Sparks -- led Glendale Community College to the 1988 National Junior College title and then teamed with Arizona high school great and current Sun Devil Athletics employee Kevin Miniefield to give ASU one of the best sets of cornerbacks in school history. Both had successful careers in the NFL, with Sparks using junior college route and Miniefield coming straight to ASU out of high school.

--David Dixon is another success story as a junior college transfer who came to ASU and then had a NFL career. He played multiple seasons with the Vikings.

Here is a list of Sun Devil junior college draft picks since 1995, and below that is a list of the best junior college players at ASU in the past two decades.
Let us know if we missed anyone.
