Baseball Heads To Fullerton For NCAA Regional

TEMPE, Ariz. – The Arizona State University baseball team will be making its 38th NCAA postseason appearance as the Sun Devils have been selected as the No. 2 seed in the Fullerton Regional.

The regional, hosted by Cal State Fullerton, also includes No. 3 seed Clemson and No. 4 seed Pepperdine. The two-seeded Sun Devils will take on Clemson on Friday at 3 p.m. (PT). The game will be available on ESPN3/WatchESPN, and broadcast by NBC Sports Radio AM 1060.

ASU will be playing in its 32nd NCAA Regional and has now made 15 consecutive postseason appearances when the team has been eligible (2012 NCAA postseason ban). Its 38 NCAA postseason appearances are the sixth most in Div. I history and its 166 NCAA tournament wins rank fourth among Div. I college baseball programs.

Against The Tigers
ASU leads the all-time series against the Tigers, 3-1, with all four meetings coming the postseason. The two teams last faced off in the first game of the 2010 College World Series, with Clemson winning the, 6-3. ASU advanced to the 2009 CWS with a pair of wins over Clemson, 7-4 and 8-2, in the Tempe Super Regional. The Devils also defeated the Tigers, 10-7, in the first game of the 1977 CWS en route to the program’s fourth national championship.  

Against the Titans
ASU is 31-29 all-time against Cal State Fullerton, including 7-11 in the postseason. The Titans defeated the Devils twice in the 2013 Fullerton Regional, including 1-0 in the first game and 6-1 in the second game. The two teams split their past four regular-season games, all midweek non-conference matchups, including two in 2012 in Tempe and a pair in 2011 in Fullerton.

Against the Waves
ASU is 10-6 all-time against Pepperdine, including 3-2 in the postseason. The Waves defeated the Devils, 3-2, in the opening game of the 2014 San Luis Obispo Regional after starter Brett Lilek was knocked out of the game in the first inning with an injury. They played seven games against the Waves between 1959-61 (4-3), as well as once in 1977 and a three-game series in 1984. The Devils defeated Pepperdine 4-2 in a Tempe Regional in 1987, as well as two games in a Tempe Regional in 1988 (11-4, 10-5) before losing the opening game of the Fullerton Regional in 2004, 5-15.

A Long Postseason History At Fullerton
This is the fourth Fullerton Regional ASU has gone to in the past 15 seasons after making trips in 2001, 2004 and 2005, and their sixth postseason trip to Fullerton in the past 15 seasons after Super Regionals in 2003 and 2005. ASU is 1-4 in postseason series’ at Fullerton, with its only victory coming when the 2005 team advanced to the CWS (Lost to Fullerton, 3-2, in the opener, before winning the next two: 6-2 and 9-8). 

FULLERTON TICKET INFORMATION

All-session tournament tickets are available for purchase either by phone at (657) 278-2783 or in-person at the Cal State Fullerton Athletics Ticket Office at Titan House on campus, from noon on Tuesday, May 26, to noon, Thursday, May 28. Prices range from $80 for reserved to $68 for general admission, and are good for each of the six or seven games in the four-team double-elimination regional.

There are a limited number of reserved all-session tournament tickets for sale. Individual tickets will be available for purchase online at fullertontitans.com at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, May 26, and at the Athletics Ticket Office beginning at noon. The Athletics Ticket Office highly recommends that you purchase all single-game tickets online to avoid long lines at the Titan House.
