First Wave Qualifies for NCAA Championships

05/29/15 | Track and Field

AUSTIN, Texas – Nine Ducks secured their spot at the NCAA Track and Field Championships in Eugene after qualifying through the first of three days at the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds Thursday.

Jenna Prandini and Jasmine Todd finished with the best two long jumps in the west regional and reserved their place in Eugene. The defending national champion Prandini jumped 21-4.75 (6.52m) on her second attempt while Todd's first attempt of 21-4 (6.50m) was good enough for second place. Todd will compete at the NCAA Outdoor Championships for the first time in her career after earning four All-America awards indoors.

It was a strong day for the duo which also finished with the top two times in the women's 100. Todd bolted to the third-fastest all-conditions time in NCAA history, crossing the finish line in 10.89 (4.0w) to win her heat. Prandini won her heat as well, taking second overall with a wind-aided time of 11.06 (3.6w). The two will run tomorrow to try and advance the championships.

Oregon will also have two representatives in the men's long jump at the NCAA Championships after Trevor Ferguson and Nate Moore finished in the top 12 on Thursday. Ferguson used a big personal best (25-8.25/7.83m) on his final attempt to move up into qualifying position, finishing sixth. Moore's best jump also came on his final attempt, reaching 25-6.75/7.79m to take 11th.

Jillian Weir punched her ticket to the NCAA Championships with a third-place finish in the women's hammer throw. Weir uncorked a throw of 220-3 (67.15m), a season best, on her final attempt to solidify her third-straight NCAA appearance. The mark is the fifth-best in the NCAA this season.

Four Ducks qualified through the preliminary round in the 10,000, led by Edward Cheserek who won the men's race in 29:43.89. Eric Jenkins will join him on the start line at Hayward Field in the event after finishing third in 29:44.59. Molly Grabill (34:35.49) and Waverly Neer (34:35.50) advanced in the women's 10,000, finishing seventh and eighth, respectively.

Most of the action on the track was only a step on the path to Eugene, where competitors were looking to advance to the quarterfinal round either on Friday or Saturday in Austin.

The Ducks advanced in large numbers during the 1,500-meter races, qualifying four men and four women to the quarterfinals. Alli Cash, Nikki Hiltz, Ashley Maton and Katie Porada each positioned themselves well in their heats to move on. On the men's side, Daniel Winn and Johnny Gregorek went 1-2 in the first heat before Colby Alexander and Blake Haney both qualified through as well.

The Ducks went 3-for-3 in advancing in the women's 800. Raevyn Rogers (2:07.04) and Annie Leblanc (2:07.75) each won their heat to move on to the quarterfinal while Skylar Evans advanced on time, finishing in 2:09.39.

Marcus Chambers won his heat of the men's 400 (46.50) to advance to the quarterfinals while Ashante Horsley ran 53.97 to finish second in her heat of the women's 400. Both will compete in the quarterfinal on Friday.

Pac-12 champion Ben Thiel advanced to the quarterfinal of the men's 400 hurdles after a third place finish in his heat (52.20).

Competition will resume on Friday beginning at 10 a.m. PT. Fans can follow along via a live web stream or live results.
