PULLMAN, Wash. -- Current and future Washington State University track and field student-athletes as well as members of the Cougars coaching staff competed last week.

At the Canadian Track & Field Championships, July 2-5, in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, assistant coach and Canadian Olympian Angela Whyte finished fifth in the senior women's 100m hurdles with a time of 13.21 seconds after a fourth-place prelim time of 13.48. This weekend, Whyte will be joined by Abby Regan, WSU's mile record-holder, at the Track Town Classic meet, July 12, also in Edmonton.

Matthew Swanson, a rising junior from North Vancouver, British Columbia, finished 12th in the senior men's 800m with a time of 1 minute 52.68 seconds.

Incoming freshman Nathan Tadesse from Surrey, British Columbia, finished fifth in the junior men's 1500m final with a time of 4:03.90 after running a prelim time of 4:02.62. Tadesse also placed eighth in the junior men's 5000m with a time of 15:21.61. Another incoming WSU freshman, Nathan Wadhwani (Maple Ridge, British Columbia), also competed in the junior men's 5k but did not complete the race.

Volunteer assistant coach Liga Velvere (Saldus, Latvia) won the women's 800m High Performance race at the Portland Summer Twilight meet, July 2, in Portland, Ore. Velvere ran a time of 2:02.90 for the win. She is scheduled to compete at the Baltic Championships, July 31-Aug. 1, and at the Latvian National Championships, Aug. 8-9.
