Campus Scoop with Mike Yam at California
Before heading down to SoCal to visit with the Bruins and Trojans, Mike Yam caught up with us to talk about the maturity of the Golden Bears:
"One thing that really stood out to me was the maturity of these players. Even last year, Sonny Dykes was looking at 42 newcomers. There were so many young guys that they’ve had to play.
I remember going back two years ago and talking with Jared Goff and Bryce Treggs. Comparing the conversations I had two years ago to the conversations I’m having with them now, they are by far more confident guys and taking on leadership roles. They’ve just matured. The play on the field speaks volumes to what they’re able to do, but just their maturity as football players stood out.
On a fun note, Goff told me last year that Kenny Lawler was his favorite wide receiver and target. I can understand why after I shook his hands. It basically engulfed my entire arm! He wears XXXL gloves, and is an absolute stud when it comes to making one-handed grabs. They have a competition amongst the wide receivers about who can consistently do the most one-handed catches. Lawler by far is the leader of the pack, according to Treggs.
We also saw pictures of the wide receivers wearing NWO shirts (‘Nasty Wide Outs’), and Treggs and Lawler brought out a championship WWE-style championship belt. They have these competitions among the guys who can say that they were the best at whatever the contest is for that particular week."
