Volleyball Clinches Temple Invitational Crown

08/29/15 | Women's Volleyball

PHILADELPHIA – Oregon volleyball were crowned Temple Invitational Champions, Saturday, as the Ducks won both matches in the doubleheader against Navy and St. John's to move to 3-0 for the season. The Ducks swept Navy in the morning match, 25-11, 25-21, 25-15 before completing the tournament sweep with a 25-12, 25-19, 25-22.

How it Happened vs St. John's: Oregon once again got off to a fast start with a 25-12 win, spreading the ball around in the attack. Martenne Bettendorf returned after missing the morning match against Navy and sprung into form with two kills early In the first set.

After surging late in the second set to capture a win, Oregon found itself with its biggest deficit of the match trailing 19-15 in the third set. The Ducks found a way to come back and ended the match on a 10-3 run to finish the tournament without dropping a single set. Though Bettendorf was in the action early, it was the third set where she came on strongest, racking up six kills while tournament MVP Amanda Benson anchored the team's defensive efforts as she had done all weekend.

How it Happened vs. Navy Oregon imposed its will in the first set, starting the match on a 20-5 run. With Martenne Bettendorf nursing an ankle injury, Kacey Nady was heavily involved in the early going, recording six of her team-leading 10 kills in the first set.

After hitting .333 in the first set, that number dropped to .174 in the second as the teams were back and forth for a majority of the set. Trailing 21-20 late, the Ducks regained control when it counted and used a 5-0 run to close out the set.

Similar to the opener against Temple on Friday, a tough second-set win proved to push Oregon past its opponent in the third with Oregon cruising to a 25-15 clincher. Oregon's block came to life in the third set as well, led by Nady who recorded six, helping the Ducks hold Navy to -.084 hitting, an Oregon school record for opponent hitting percentage.

What it Means: Oregon has yet to drop a set in its first three matches, and the Ducks have been able to do so while playing a deep roster. Every freshman has now made their debut with Sumeet Gill making the start against Navy while August Raskie gained experience replacing Maggie Scott in the third set at setter. Marine Hall-Poirier also made her debut in an Oregon uniform on Saturday.

Though the Ducks have started hot in recent years, including an 11-0 start at the beginning of last season, this is the first time since 2009 they have swept each of their first three matches. Avoiding a lapse with young players playing important can only help Oregon down the road with big matches against Nebraska and Florida on the horizon, as well as the Pac-12 schedule.

All-Tournament Team: Junior libero Amanda Benson was named the tournament MVP after averaging 4.78 digs/set over the course of the weekend. Teammates Martenne Bettendorf (4.33 kills/set; .408 pct) and Kacey Nady (2.56 kils/set; .500 pct; 1.44 blocks/set) were named to the all-tournament team.

Notes and Numbers: Navy's hitting percentage of -.084 is an Oregon school record for opponent hitting percentage, previously set in a 1993 match against Wichita State in 1983 (-.072)…Oregon dominated the hitting battle over the weekend, hitting .315 and holding opponents to .038.

Quotes from Coach Moore:

On the weekend wins:

“We're happy to get three wins against three solid teams. It was a perfect weekend for us in terms of where we are with our team. Everyone was able to play over the weekend and everyone was successful when they went in.”

On Amanda Benson being named Tournament MVP

“Without Amanda right now, we're in trouble, so thank goodness we have her. Amanda is doing a great job once the match starts of making sure everyone is doing what they're supposed to be doing and that's helping a lot.”

On the return of Martenne Bettendorf:

“Martenne just knows the offense and is creative with it. She's great at the disappearing and reappearing and seemingly coming out of nowhere. We're much more creative and innovative when she's in there.”

Up Next: Oregon will have one day off before facing LIU Brooklyn on Sunday, Aug. 31 at 5 p.m. ET in Brooklyn.
