LAS VEGAS—After going 4-0 in the opening day of competition on Friday, Arizona State wrestling's freshman Tanner Hall will wrestle in the heavyweight semifinals on Saturday at the 34th Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invite at the Cashman Center.
The championship semifinal matches are set to begin at 10 a.m. PT on Saturday, and Hall will take on Minnesota's Michael Kroells. On the other side of the bracket are Virginia Tech's Ty Walz and Oklahoma's Ross Larson.
Hall opened his day in the round of 64, beating out Pac-12 foe Spencer Empey of Cal Poly in a 6-2 decision. He encountered another Pac-12 opponent in the round of 32, defeating Gaylen Edmo in a rematch of the dual bout in Tempe on Nov. 22, in a 3-1 decision.
In the round of 16, Hall defeated Hofstra's Michael Hughes in a 4-1 decision before defeating Northern Iowa's Bliaze Cabell, also in a 4-1 decision, to earn a spot in the semifinal bout.
Both sophomore Robbie Mathers and senior Matt Kraus fell in their quarterfinal bouts on Friday, but will wrestle in consolation matches on Saturday in their respective weight classes.
At 141 pounds, Mathers pinned Northern Idaho's Jordan Hall in 1:16 before taking down Virginia's Emilio Martinez in a 12-8 decision in the round of 16. In the quarterfinals, Mathers fell in a 15-7 major decision to Ohio State's Micah Jordan. On Saturday, Mathers will take on Army's Logan Everett in the second Consolation Round of Eight.
At 149 pounds, Kraus opened with a 6-4 sudden victory decision over North Dakota State's Clayton Ream in the round of 32 before pinning Bucknell's Victor Lopez in 2:34 in the round of 16. Kraus fell in a 9-2 decision in the quarterfinals to Kent State's Mike Depalma. On Saturday, Kraus will face off against Purdue's Alex Griffin in the second Consolation Round of Eight.
Following the conclusion of competition in Las Vegas, Sun Devil wrestling will be back in action on Dec. 29-30, at the Midlands Championships in Evanston, Ill.
