EVANSTON, Ill.—Arizona State wrestling's freshman heavyweight No. 7 Tanner Hall scored a takedown with seconds to go in the third period to defeat Oregon's State's No. 2 Amarveer Dhesi, 6-5, in the quarterfinals at the 53rd Midlands Championships, hosted by Northwestern at Welsh-Ryan Arena.

“I think, regardless of who you are, if you're a Cael Sanderson, if you've never lost a college match, or whoever you are, you're going to run into times and matches where you're going to have short time and you're going to have to score if you want to win,” Hall said. “That's what I was thinking about. When you look up, see you have fourteen seconds left, you have to say, this is it, I have to go. This is the time to figure out how bad you really want this.”

Hall handed Dhesi his first loss of the season, snapping his 14-bout win streak, and will face Oklahoma's No. 6 Ross Larson in the heavyweight semifinals on Wednesday. Hall opened the day with a 10-2 major decision over Northern Illinois' Jake Cochrane, and then defeated Columbia's No. 10 Garrett Ryan, 4-0.

“Going into it, I obviously knew that [Dhesi] is a pretty tough opponent, that he was going to be someone who was going to push me, and I just knew that I had to keep the pace up, I had to stick to my stuff, and make sure that I focused on what I needed to do, rather than what he was going to do,” Hall said. “I stuck to that for the most part.”

Redshirt senior Josh DaSilveira, wrestling unseeded in the 197 pound bracket, scored the Midlands' first upset of the day, when he defeated CSU Bakersfield's Reuben Franklin, the No. 2 seed, 9-7, in the opening round. He followed with an 8-6 decision over Northwestern's Jacob Berkowitz, the No. 15 seed.

After falling, 11-5, to No. 10 Hayden Hrymack of Rutgers in the quarterfinals, DaSilveira will wrestle on Wednesday in the consolation bouts, first facing No. 13 Ryan Wolfe of Rider.

At 157 pounds, redshirt sophomore Oliver Pierce went 3-1 on the day, starting with a 7-2 win over Oklahoma's Brock Wingbermuehle. After falling to NC State's Thomas Gantt, the No. 2 seed, in a 12-6 decision, Pierce bounced back with a late takedown to defeat Princeton's Adam Krop, 3-1. Pierce rounded out the day with a 13-4 major decision over Kent State's Casey Sparkman, and will face Columbia's No. 9 Markus Schediel on Wednesday.

Arizona State's true freshman Zahid Valencia, who is redshirting the 2015-16 season, advanced to the quarterfinals at 184 pounds, and will be in action on Wednesday in consolation competition, first up against Dane Pestano of Iowa State.

In the team race, Iowa leads after the first day with 96.0 points, followed by Nebraska with 78.0 points, and Rutgers with 62.0 points. Arizona State sits in 17th out of 43 teams with 28.0 points.

Competition at the 53rd Midlands Championships concludes on Wednesday. The third session is set to start at 11 a.m. MT/Noon CT, and the finals will start at 6 p.m. MT/7 p.m. CT.
