Women?s S&D Dominates as Arizona Splits with ASU

TEMPE, Ariz. – Arizona swimming and diving split with ASU for its final dual meet of the season on Saturday at Mona Plummer Aquatic Center. The women claimed a dominating victory over the Devils, 208-88, winning 12 of the 16 events. Meanwhile, the men fell 168-132.  

For the women, Annie Ochitwa, Emma Schoettmer, Mackenzie Rumrill and Taylor Schick kicked off the day with a win in the 200 medley relay (1:38.06). The team of Taylor Garcia, Sara Borendame, Katrina Konopka and Ashley Sutherland followed with a time of 1:39.79.

Bonnie Brandon then earned a victory in the 1,000 free with 9:45.55, followed by Emma McCarthy with 9:57.27. Schick continued the win-streak in the 200 free, taking first in 1:46.33. Cameron McHugh placed third in the event with 1:47.67.

In the 100 back, Konopka finished first (53.38), followed by Garcia (53.61). Konopka later won the 100 free in 49.13, while Schick came in second with 49.54.

Arizona then went 1-2-3 in the 100 breast. Schoettmer took first with a time of 1:00.52, followed by Borendame with 1:01.47 and Alexandra Martelle with 1:02.51. Schoettmer later earned another victory in the 200 breast (2:09.74), while Borendame placed third (2:13.56).

Mik Ranslem added another win for the Wildcats, taking first in the 200 fly with 1:59.68. Daniela Georges took third in the event with 2:00.60.

In the 50 free, Ochitwa earned a first-place finish with a time of 22.40, while Paige Kremer placed third with 22.92. More than halfway through the meet, the women had won eight-straight events.  

McHugh then finished second in the 200 back (1:56.84), followed by Garcia (1:58.50). Senior, Brandon had her second victory of the day in the 500 free, winning in 4:46.36, while Sarah Shimomura took second with 4:49.56.

The Cats then went 1-2 in the 100 fly, as Ochitwa came in first with 51.78. Rumrill was runner-up, touching in 53.90.

Georges placed second in the 400 IM (4:16.47), followed by Karli Thuen (4:20.45).

The women closed out the meet with the same energy they started with. The team of Konopka, Brandon, Ochitwa and Schick took first in the 200 free relay with 1:29.35, sealing the win.  

Sally Hackett finished second in the 1-meter for diving with a score of 261.45, four points behind ASU. Kaitlin Costello followed with 247.50. In the 3-meter, Costello placed second (281.85), followed by Hackett (281.40).

On the men's side, the team of Chatham Dobbs, Andrew Sovero, Chad Idensohn and J.P. Beach took second in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:26.92.

In the 1,000 free, Chris Wieser finished first, touching in 9:01.60. Tyler Fowler was runner-up with 9:02.00, both breaking their season bests.

Parks Jones placed third in the 200 free with a time of 1:37.20, while Dobbs came in third in the 100 back with 47.48.

The Cats then had back-to-back second-place finishes. Gage Crosby took second in the 100 breast, touching in 54.80. In the 200 fly, Justin Wright finished second (1:43.52), followed by Rasmus Skjaerpe (1:47.11) and Mathias Oh (1:48.10).

Renny Richmond was runner-up in the 50 free with a time of 19.85, two-hundredths of a second behind ASU's Richard Bohus. He then took third in the 100 free (44.07), one-hundredth of a second behind ASU.

In the 200 back, Thane Maudslien finished second with 1:44.15, followed by Matt Lujan with 1:47.07.

Arizona went 1-2 in the 500 free as Wieser earned another victory (4:23.12), while Nick Hogsed placed second (4:23.38).

In the 100 fly, Richmond was runner-up with 47.89 and Skjaerpe took third with 47.98.

Nick Thorne finished first in the 400 IM (3:51.61), while Grant Sanders followed in second (3:53.56).

The team of Richmond, Idensohn, Dobbs and Beach then took second in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:19.58, four-tenths of a second behind ASU.

For diving, Rafael Quintero earned a first-place finish in the 1-meter (400.73) and 3-meter (400.35) after being named January's Pac-12 Diver of the Month. Dominic Ricotta finished second in the 3-meter with 367.80 and third in the 1-meter with 317.55.

Up Next: Arizona diving and women's swimming head to Federal Way, Wash. to compete at the Pac-12 Championships. The competition starts Wed. Feb. 24th and continues through Sat. Feb. 27th.
