Pac-12 Announces Tennis Players of the Week
SAN FRANCISCO - The Conference office announced today that Mackenzie McDonald of UCLA was named Pac-12 Men's Tennis Player of the Week for the third time this season and his fellow Bruin Catherine Harrison was voted Women's Tennis Player of the Week for action during the week of Feb. 22-28.
McDonald (Piedmont, Calif.) is one of 11 athletes to have four or more weekly accolades since the Conference began honoring Tennis Players of the Week in 2006. To earn his third honor of the season, No. 19 McDonald upset fourth-ranked Tom Fawcett in straight sets in the Bruins hard-fought win over No. 29 Stanford last weekend. McDonald broke Fawcett at 6-5 in the second set when Fawcett double faulted on match point. In doubles, the third-ranked duo of McDonald and Martin Redlicki downed Fawcett and Maciek Romanowicz, 6-3. It is the 28th all-time weekly honor for the Bruins program.
No. 19 Harrison (Germantown, Tenn.) downed No. 21 Giuliana Olmos in straight sets in last week’s crosstown showdown between the 29th-ranked Bruins and the 38th-ranked Trojans. In doubles play, the fifth-ranked pair of Harrison and Kyle McPhillips skated past No. 8 Olmos and Gabby Smith. Then against Baylor, Harrison defeated Rhiann Newborn in straight sets to clinch the match for UCLA. In doubles, Harrison and McPhillips dispatched No. 15 Kiah Generette and Blair Shankle, 6-1. This is Harrison's first-career weekly honor and the 15th all-time for UCLA.
