Pac-12 announces weekly gymnastics honors

Mar 8, 2016

SAN FRANCISCO – Today the Pac-12 Conference announced the Pac-12 women’s gymnastics weekly honors for the week of March 1 - 7. STANFORD’s Elizabeth Price was named the Gymnast of the Week, UCLA’s Danusia Francis was voted Specialist of the Week, and UCLA’s Katelyn Ohashi was named the Freshman/Newcomer of the Week.

STANFORD sophomore Elizabeth Price earned Gymnast of the Week honors for the fourth time this sea-son after tying her career high in the all-around in STANFORD’s upset win over No. 7 UCLA and No. 10 Georgia. Price’s 39.675 in the all-around was not her only career-high of that night; she also tied her ca-reer mark on bars with a 9.975 to claim individual victories in both the all-around and the bars. Price also placed second on vault (9.975) and tied for fourth on floor (9.900). She is one of the few gymnasts in col-legiate gymnastics performing a yurchenko double full on vault and went 9.975. Her scores helped Stan-ford tie or set season bests in all four events and register a season-high 197.400. Price has scored 9.825 or higher in 32-of-35 performances this season and 9.900 or higher in 39-of-60 performances during her collegiate career. She has also registered 26 individual event victories in 42 possible events this season.

UCLA senior Danusia Francis earned Specialist of the Week honors this week, becoming the fifth different UCLA gymnast to do so this season. Francis scored the first perfect 10 of the season by any Pac-12 gym-nast and the first perfect 10 by a UCLA gymnast since she scored a 10 on Mar. 16, 2014. Francis was flawless on the balance beam, performing a routine that was both graceful and difficult, ending with a stuck landing on her one-of-a-kind sideways side aerial to immediate full-twisting layout dismount. Francis now has two perfect 10s in her career, and she has moved back into the No. 1 ranking in the nation on beam. Her 10 on beam was only the ninth ever by a UCLA gymnast. One of the most consistent gymnasts in collegiate history, Francis has hit 59 routines in a row without a fall, with 53 of those routines scoring 9.8 or above, and has hit 118 of 120 routines without a fall in team competition over her career. She has posted five beam victories this season and is averaging 9.922.

UCLA freshman Katelyn Ohashi earned Freshman / Newcomer of the Week honors for the fourth time this season after her performance in UCLA’s tri-meet with STANFORD and Georgia. In her second meet back after missing four meets with a sternum fracture, Ohashi posted big numbers once again with a pair of 9.9s on beam and floor. Since coming back, she has scored 9.9s on all three of her routines. After scor-ing a career-high 9.9 on beam on her first routine back last week, she matched that mark this week with another 9.9. She made her return to the floor lineup for the first time since Jan. 23 and recorded a new career-high of 9.9, placing fourth and helping the Bruins score a meet-high team floor score of 49.475.

A gymnast of the week has been selected every week of the season since 2001. The Specialist of the Week award was added in 2008 and Freshman/Newcomer of the Week was added in 2013.
