Pac-12 announces softball players of the week

UCLA Athletics / Arizona Athletics

SAN FRANCISCO — The Pac-12 Conference office announced the softball weekly honors for play from Mar. 7-13. UCLA junior Delaney Spaulding was named player of the week, ARIZONA’s Taylor McQuillin was tabbed pitcher of the week and freshman of the week.

Spaulding (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) hit home runs in three games this weekend and recorded hits, runs and RBI in all four contests, helping the 14th-ranked Bruins to a perfect 4-0 mark. Spaulding hit .562 (9-for-16) with 11 runs batted in, seven runs scored, three homers and two stolen bases. She opened the weekend by tying a career high with five RBI and three hits against Utah Valley, including a two-run homer, a two-run double and scored twice. Later that afternoon, the junior added two more hits vs. Iowa State. Spaulding left the yard in both ends of Sunday’s doubleheader. She was 3-for-3 with four RBI, two runs and two steals in game one versus Princeton. She hit her second grand slam of the season. Spaulding then added another homer against Long Beach State in the weekend finale. This is Spaulding’s second weekly accolade and UCLA’s 139th weekly award.

McQuillin (Mission Viejo, Calif.) allowed just a single earned run in two complete-game victories at the Maverick Classic, helping the Wildcats to a perfect 3-0 record in the non-conference finale. McQuillin pitched all eight innings of an extra-inning battle between the Wildcats and Texas, allowing just a single earned run in Arizona’s 3-2, walk off victory in eight innings. She struck out eight Longhorns and walked just a pair in the outing. The freshman followed that performance with a four-hit shutout of Samford on Sunday. All four-hits came with the bases empty and two out, making for a stress-free seven innings for McQuillin, who struck out five. For the weekend, McQuillin posted a 0.47 ERA with 13 strikeouts and four walks in 15.0 innings pitched. She posted a .185 batting average against and a 0.93 WHIP. For the season, McQuillin is 7-3 with a 2.56 ERA and a 66/10 strikeout to walk ratio in 57.1 innings pitched. This is McQuillin’s third-career weekly honor, second-straight freshman of the week honor and Arizona’s 153rd weekly nod.

A player of the week has been selected every week since 1989, with the pitcher of the week honor dating back to 1992. This is the second season of freshman of the week honors.

This week Arizona travels to Arizona State to kick off Pac-12 play, while UCLA heads to California. Pac-12 Networks television information can be found here.
