Pac-12 Announces Tennis Players of the Week
SAN FRANCISCO - The Conference office announced today that Andre Goransson of CALIFORNIA was named Pac-12 Men's Tennis Player of the Week while WASHINGTON STATE's Donika Bashota was voted Women's Tennis Player of the Week for action during the week of April 4-10.
The 23rd-ranked Goransson (Hollviken, Sweden) won twice in singles and posted the clinching victory against No. 30 Washington to lead No. 19 California past the Huskies and No. 36 Oregon in Berkeley in its last two matches. Cal improved its Pac-12 Conference record to 4-2 and its overall record to 13-5 after beating Washington, 4-0, on Friday and Oregon, 4-1, on Sunday. Against the Huskies, Goransson beat Jake Douglas, 6-2, 6-2, at court-three singles to clinch the match. Two days later, the junior defeated the Ducks’ Thomas Laurent, 7-5, 6-1, also on court three at the Hellman Tennis Complex. It is Goransson's first-career weekly accolade and the 24th all-time for the Golden Bears.
Bashota (Lidkoping, Sweden) recorded two of the biggest upsets of her collegiate career last weekend, defeating No. 12 Klara Fabikova of California and No. 78 Caroline Doyle of Stanford. In Friday’s match against Cal, Bashota provided the only Cougar victory as she fought off three-straight match points down 9-6 in the third-set tiebreaker for a 6-7, 6-0, 11-9 win. In closing out the last five points of the match for the victory, she recorded the biggest win of her career and defeated the highest-ranked opponent by a Cougar player since the 2010 season. Bashota followed that up with another three-set win, this time over Stanford’s Doyle. After splitting the first two sets, Bashota dominated the 10-point tiebreaker, taking the final seven points of the match, winning 5-7, 6-3, 10-2. This is Bashota's first-career weekly accolade and the seventh all-time for the Cougars.
