UCLA and California Men to Meet in Final, Women's Semifinals Set for Saturday

OJAI, Calif. - The final of the 2016 Pac-12 Men's Tennis Championship is decided after No. 1 seed UCLA and No. 3 seed California earned semifinal victories. On the women's side, the singles and doubles semifinal matchups are set after a day of numerous upsets.

No. 1 seed UCLA beat No. 4 seed Stanford to earn a spot in Saturday's final at 6 p.m. PT. The doubles point came down to the wire with courts No. 2 and No. 3 up for grabs. Stanford's Tom Fawcett and Maciek Romanowicz won on court No. 1 by a score of 6-2. David Wilczynski and Nolan Paige were able to clinch the point for the Cardinal with a 7-5 win on court No. 2. Court No. 3 was suspended with UCLA's Sameer Kumar and Yale Goldberg leading 6-5. The Bruins responded  well to losing the doubles point by winning the first set in each of the six singles matches. Karue Sell got the Bruins on the board with a 6-2, 6-2, win on court No. 4. Joseph DiGiulio of UCLA then won 6-3, 6-1 on court No. 6. Mackenzie McDonald was able to add a point to the Bruins score with his 6-4, 6-3 win on court No. 1. Gage Brymer sealed the victory for UCLA with a win on court No. 3, 6-2, 6-4.

No. 3 seed California upset No. 2 seed USC by a score of 4-1. It was a highly contested doubles point that the Golden Bears eventually claimed in the end. USC's Max de Vroome and Thibault Forget won 6-1 on court No. 2 but California won on court No. 3 with J.T. Nishimura and Mads Engsted at 6-3. On court No. 1, Florian Lakat and Filip Bergevi of California won 7-6 (6) over Nick Crystal and Laurens Verboven to clinch the doubles point for the Trojans. Bergevi then won the first singles point for the Golden Bears, taking court No. 4, 6-3, 6-3. Nishimura's 6-2, 6-4 victory on court No. 6.

Highlights from the women's doubles round of 16 include Margo Pletcher and Brianna Turley of Utah upsetting the No. 1 seed doubles pair from California by a score of 6-2. No. 4 seed Giuliana Olmos and Gabby Smith from USC were pushed to the limit by Washington's Elianne Douglas-Miron and Kenadi Hance but the Trojans prevailed in the end, winning 7-6 (4). Stanford's Carola Zhao and Melissa Lord defeated Zoe Katz and Madison Westby of USC in a neck-and-neck matchup, advancing with a score of 7-6 (5).

Ebony Panoho and Alexandra Osborne of Arizona State defeated Utah's Pletcher and Turley, 7-5, to advance to the semifinal of the Women's Doubles Championship. The Sun Devil duo will square off against No. 4 seed Olmos and Smith of USC, who won their quarterfinal match, 6-1. Zhao and Lord advanced to the semifinal, upsetting the No. 3 seed Catherine Harrison and Kyle McPhillips of UCLA by a score of 7-6 (2). The Stanford pair will face Washington's Nour Abbes and Maki Kobayashi in the semifinal. The Huskies duo upset No. 2 seed Taylor Davidson and Caroline Doyle of Stanford.

In the women's singles quarterfinal, California's No. 1 seed Maegan Manasse responded from her earlier loss in doubles play and won, 6-2, 6-3. She will face No. 4 seed Olmos of USC in the semifinal round after Olmos' 6-1, 6-2 victory today. UCLA's  Harrison punched her ticket to the semifinal with a 6-2, 6-3 victory in the quarterfinal. Harrison will face Arizona's Lauren Marker after Marker faced a tough matchup against Stanford's Caroline Doyle in the quarterfinal, winning 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.

The 2016 Pac-12 Tennis Championships continue tomorrow with the men's championship match scheduled for 6 p.m. PT at Libbey Park in Ojai, Calif. The semifinals of the women's singles and doubles competition take place tomorrow, Saturday, April 23, beginning at 9 a.m. PT at Libbey Park.
