Top seeds advance to Pac-12 Beach Volleyball Championships pairs semis
LOS ANGELES - The top four seeds advanced to the semifinals of the Pairs Bracket on the first day of the inaugural Pac-12 Conference Beach Volleyball Championships at USC's Merle Norman Stadium on Thursday.
No. 1 seed Kelly Claes and Sara Hughes of USC, No. 2 Madison Witt and McKenna Witt of ARIZONA, No. 3 Megan McNamara and Nicole McNamara of UCLA and No. 4 Bianca Arellano and Whitney Follette of ARIZONA STATE all won two matches on the opening day of the first-ever league championship, with the top three seeds each advancing via 2-0 sweeps.
All but one of Thursday's 12 first round and quarterfinal matches held according to seeds with WASHINGTON's No. 10 seeded duo of Crissy Jones and Tia Scambray scoring the lone upset, 2-1 against No. 7 Sarah Cole and Mia Merino from CALIFORNIA.
Friday's semifinals begin at 10 a.m. PT and will feature a pair of intriguing storylines. USC's Claes and Hughes will put their 63-match win streak and perfect 38-0 season record on the line against Arellano and Follette in one semifinal, while two sets of twins - Witt and McNamara - will square off in the other semifinal.
Those matches plus the Pairs Bracket final at 11 a.m. PT will be televised by Pac-12 Network, Pac-12 Arizona and Pac-12 Los Angeles.
Team Bracket play will begin on Friday afternoon after the crowning of the Pairs Bracket champions, with No. 1 nationally ranked and top seeded USC slated to take on No. 8 Oregon at 1 p.m. PT.
