SALT LAKE CITY – Two-time defending Pac-12 champion STANFORD Cardinal posted the low score in the third round with a 7-under 348 to push their team lead to 12 strokes over CALIFORNIA. The Cardinal take a score of 29-under heading into the final round of the Pac-12 Men’s Golf Championships at The Country Club (Par 71, 7,209 yards) in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Stanford held a five-stroke lead over the Golden Bears heading into the third round, then increased its lead behind the play of sophomore Franklin Huang (Poway, Calif.) who posted a 3-under 68 and junior Maverick McNealy (Portola Valley, Calif.) with a 2-under 69.

“It’s a team effort for sure,” stated Stanford coach Conrad Ray. “I think we had five guys out of six that had par or better today. The set up was tough, the wind was blowing, and it was kind of chilly. I was proud of our guys and we just ground it out. Cal and USC are great teams, so we know that we have a lot of golf left to play tomorrow.”

“Franklin Huang was low for us at 3-under, which is a nice round of golf out there,” added Ray. “Guys were just solid today, not up and down on the rollercoaster with emotion. They just tried to hit good shoots and build a lead and tomorrow we will be ready to go again.”

On his 12-stroke lead heading into the final round, Ray responded, “I wish it was 20 against those two teams. Anything can happen, but I think our guys will focus on hitting good shots and controlling the things that we have control over.”

California sophomore KK Limbhasut (Loma Linda, Calif.) has been a model of consistency as he increased his individual lead with another sub-par round as he shot his third straight 5-under 66 to finish the third round at 15-under 198. It’s the fourth time in the last five rounds of the Pac-12 Championships that he has posted 66, dating back to last year’s Championships at the Palouse Ridge Golf Course in Pullman, Wash.

Limbhasut, who has carded 14 birdies, one eagle and just one bogey over the course of 54 holes, carries a six-stroke lead into the final round over a trio of seniors at 9-under 204 in ARIZONA STATE’s Jon Rahm (Barrika, Spain), UCLA’s Jonathan Garrick (Atherton, Calif.) and Stanford’s David Boote (Surrey, England).

“I got off to a hot start,” said Limbhasut. “I birdied No. 1. It’s a pretty tough par three and made a 30-footer. It’s a great way to start a round.”

In reference to his consistent play,” Limbhasut added, “I wanted to keep the ball in play as there was more wind today than the past two rounds. The greens are not too big here, so if I hit a green, I would have a chance to make a putt.”

Rahm also reflected on today’s round, “I started great. The first two rounds after the first few holes, I was not doing good. I was always over par. So I set my mind today to first making par on one, and then get things going and play a little smarter. That’s what I did as I was three-under through four and was playing great.“

For the second straight round of the Championships, The Country Club course record of 7-under 64 was tied as WASHINGTON STATE sophomore Zach Anderson posted Saturday’s low round, matching yesterday’s performance by Stanford sophomore Jeff Swegle.

The Championships will conclude with the final round on Sunday beginning at 8 a.m. MT.
