Ducks Fly High at NCATA Event Finals

04/29/17 | Acrobatics & Tumbling

AZUSA, Calif. - The University of Oregon Acrobatics and Tumbling team earned four individual national championship titles, two All-Americans and head coach Chelsea Shaw was named the National Collegiate Acrobatics and Tumbling (NCATA) Coach of the Year at the individual event finals Saturday morning at the Felix Event Center.

The Ducks were named national champions in the Salto Toss, Quad Tumbling pass, 6-Element Tumbling pass, and the Open Tumbling pass. Senior Krista Phillips and junior Taylor Galvin were both named to the 2017 NCATA All-American team.

The individual event finals previewed the national championship match-up between the No. 1 seed Oregon Ducks and No. 2 Baylor Bears in the title match to take place at 7:00 p.m. Saturday night.

Baylor earned five titles, the Ducks had four, and Hawaii Pacific earned three. Quinnipiac (2) and Fairmont State (1) also were named event national champions as well.

"Event finals are always fun," said Shaw. "There are lots of talented teams and heats that get to go head-to-head and compete. I was proud of the way our athletes represented Oregon. Taylor and Krista are phenomenal athletes, and they both deserved the recognition they received today by being named All-Americans."

"I was not expecting to be named Coach of the Year, but I'm extremely honored. I feel so blessed to get to coach the sport I love and the amazing athletes we have at Oregon. It's truly a dream come true."

The Ducks' first national event title came in the Salto Toss, as Casi Jackson, Taylr Keating, Phillips, Kaile Michaud and Hannah Lichtenthaler notched a 9.70. Quinnipiac were the event runner-ups with a 9.60.

In the Quad Tumbling pass, Michaud, Nicole Kelly, Tia Thomas, and Hannah Blair earned a 9.45 for the title, and was the only team to notch a score 9.00 and above. Baylor, Azusa Pacific, Quinnipiac and Alderson Broaddus earned scores of 8.80, 8.35, 8.15, and 7.60, respectively.

In the 6-Element Tumbling pass, Galvin's pass earned a score of 9.95 to best Kaylee Adams of Baylor (9.925). The title is the Foothill Ranch, Calif., native's second consecutive in the 6-Element pass and her third consecutive Tumbling event national title.

Phillips notched a 9.90 in the Open Tumbling pass, beating Lauren Sturm of Baylor (9.875). Heather Hovander (APU) and Makayla Garland (Hawaii Pacific) finished third and fourth respectively with scores of 9.75 and 9.60.

The All-American recognition is the second of both Galvin and Phillips' careers.
