Cal-UC Davis Postgame Quotes

Cal-UC Davis Postgame Quotes

California Head Coach Cuonzo Martin

On the game
"Good game, hard-fought game. I thought UC Davis in the second half really started imposing their will and driving the ball, playing hard and making plays at the rim, showing off what they really do well. I thought in the first half we did a great job at taking away those passing lanes and not giving a lot of options for their perimeter guys to make those plays, and in the second half we gave up a little bit. They made plays and really stayed in attack mode -- especially No. 11, he made some plays getting to the rim, putting pressure on our bigs and getting them into foul trouble."

On the 26-game home win streak
"I've really never heard the guys talk about it. Obviously, we talked about it today after the game, about having the history of the record and what it means. It's been since 1960. That's a long time ago, and to be a part of that is incredible. We still want to win home games, protect our court and there's still work to be done, but in most cases with players, these streaks and such don't set in until the players leave the school, years later, because right now you're still competing and trying to win games, trying to get better as a team. We're all still trying to find our way and our chemistry, but it's a good thing to be a part of."

On Cole Welle's performance and development
"The thing with Cole for me, it's not a surprise because he works so hard. He came in 185, and now weighs 230 pound. He built muscle. He works hard and works on his outside shots and his defense, and he goes against some great bigs every day. He sees the elbows and understands the need to battle every game, and he really understands the angles he needs to hit to score the points he's supposed to. He's not doing anything special or flashy. He's a case of being a guy who works extremely hard and carries out his assignment. That's a product of a young man who carries out his assignment and is ready when his number is called. When he stepped on the floor, and did what he did, it didn't surprise me because I knew he would be ready to play. That's the type of guy he is."

California Fr. Guard Charlie Moore

On post-game message from Coach
"He just told us it was a good win. Good effort out there. In the second half, we let up a little bit defensively out there, but he told us good win and we'll just get back to the drawing board tomorrow,"

On large amount of turnovers throughout the game
"I think it was a great defensive game for both of us as a team. We caused turnovers, and they turned us over at times. Second half I think we came out a little lackadaisical at the beginning -- like the first five minutes – and that's where they got a lot of the turnovers off of in the second half. We've just got to get back to the drawing board and make sure our second half is not as bad next game."

On being aggressive and jumping into opponents' passing lanes
"Coach wants us to get into the passing lanes all the time and he wants us to knock passes and make it hard for them to pass to the wing, so that's just what I was trying to do today, and so was Grant and the rest of the team."

California Sr. Guard Grant Mullins

On being able to go after the home winning streak
"You know it's at 26 now and these guys have done it over the past year. Me and Charlie are new guys, so we're just excited to be part of it and keep it going next game."

On shooting against their zone defense
"Me, Charlie and Sam up front -- we're all pretty smart guards and we kind of know how to play up there, and know how to move the ball. Then sometimes that just ends up that I was the open guy this game, and sometimes Charlie is open other games, and it's just nice when they're falling."

On being able to win games when key players are not playing well
"I think it's huge. Obviously those guys (Ivan and Jabari) are so talented that when they're off a little bit or they're being doubled, other guys can step up, that's huge for us going forward."

UC Davis Head Coach Jim Les

On biggest takeaway from today's game
"I was disappointed. We have a lot of respect for Cal and Cuonzo [Martin] does a great job and they have a really good team, but I didn't think we put up much of a fight tonight. We have to get back to the drawing board and work on our fight in these situations. It was a great opportunity to come here and play and I didn't think we took advantage of it tonight."

On defending Charlie Moore and Ivan Rabb
"I've got a lot of respect for [Ivan] Rabb. He's a heck of a player and we tried to double him which opens up the game a little bit. Charlie Moore is as good of a freshman point guard as I have seen in a very long time. I think he's one of the best freshmen in America, really impressed with him and I think he's also going to be one heck of a player in this league for a long time."

On one major aspect that the team can improve on
"One is turnovers. Our half-court defense was fairly solid but in the first half we turned it over 16 times and handed them 19 easy points off of those turnovers and you aren't going to beat a team like that doing that."
