Quinn Brodey was a double from the cycle, freshman
Will Matthiessen earned his first win and junior reliever
Colton Hock moved up the Stanford baseball record books as the No. 15 Cardinal downed Long Beach State, 7-3, in a Tuesday matinee at Sunken Diamond.
Brodey was 4-for-5 with two runs, two RBI, two singles, a triple and a home run. He had two chances to record Stanford's first cycle since 2011, but fell just short as he managed a single in his last two at-bats.
Matthiessen allowed just one hit in three scoreless innings of relief, while Hock entered with one out in the ninth, and immediately induced a double play to leave the tying run on deck. It was Hock's seventh save of the year, and tied him for fourth all-time at Stanford with 16 career saves.
Brodey homered in his first at-bat. It was preceded back-to-back doubles from
Matt Winaker, who turned a single up the middle into a two-bagger when he took advantage of a lackadaisical outfield, and
Nico Hoerner – both of whom extended hitting streaks to eight games. The two-run Brodey blast put the Cardinal up 3-1 just three batters into the home half of the first.
An inning later, senior
Jack Klein hit his first home run of the season. The towering shot to left field gave Stanford a 4-1 advantage.
Long Beach (14-10) entered the game on a four-game winning streak, which included a sweep of No. 5 Cal State Fullerton. The Dirtbags led off the game with a home run before sophomore starter
Andrew Summerville retired 12 of the next 13 batters.
However, another solo home run in the fifth made it a two-run game, and brought Matthiessen out of the bullpen.
Meanwhile, Stanford (14-6) extended it lead behind Brodey, and freshman
Daniel Bakst. Brodey tripled into the right field corner to start the fifth and Bakst promptly singled him home.
The Cardinal added another run in the fifth when
Duke Kinamon scored on a passed ball, and tallied another on an RBI ground out by junior
Jesse Kuet in the seventh.

Tyler Thorne and
Brett Hanewich recorded four outs to bridge the gap to Hock.
NUMBERS…
Summerville's final line included four innings, three hits, two strikeouts and just the two earned runs. Bakst had another two-hit day as the designated hitter as he finished 2-for-4 with a walk and an RBI. Kinamon scored twice, and the Cardinal out-hit the Dirtbags, 10-6.
AND NOTABLES
Bakst extended his hitting streak to six games … Matthiessen has not allowed a run in the first 13.2 innings of his career … Kuet made his first start of the year at third base ... Stanford won its eighth straight Tuesday home game and has won 13 of its last 14 of those – it's only loss was in 10 innings to Santa Clara … The last Cardinal to hit for the cycle was Brian Ragira against Santa Clara on March 22, 2011 … Stanford has had just three cycles since 1992 (Steve Soloman in 1992 and Michael Taylor in 2005) … This is Stanford's best 20-game start since the 2012 team began the year at 16-4.
WHAT'S AHEAD
Stanford has four games remaining on its eight-game homestand. The Cardinal welcomes No. 1 Oregon State to The Farm for a three-game set, Friday-Sunday. This weekend features Trading Card giveaways (Friday, 6 p.m.), Bark at the Park (Saturday, 2 p.m.) and another autograph and run the bases day (Sunday, 1 p.m.).
