Beavers host High Performance Meet

April 26, 2017 | Women's Track & Field

CORVALLIS, Ore. – The deepest field in meet history and and Oregon State's strongest team since the program's reinstatement will compete at the fifth annual High Performance Meet this Friday and Saturday at the Whyte Track & Field Center.

Approximately 700 competitors are expected for the event, which has evolved from modest beginnings to become the jewel of OSU's outdoor season, and one of the premier regular-season meets in the Pacific Northwest. Admission and parking are free.

"It's going to be phenomenal," OSU coach Kelly Sullivan said. "It's a great cross-section of sprints, hurdles, jumps and throws, with a wonderful combination of athletes.

"We'll have competitors from OSU, Oregon, Washington, Colorado, Utah, Idaho, Eastern Washington, Portland, Portland State, Montana, Nevada, Seattle University and Boise State, and open/club, NCAA DII and DIII and junior college competitors, and some 2012 and 2016 Olympians.

"We will also have many unattached athletes from running clubs nationwide, competing in what promises to be two days of outstanding competition. It is a great opportunity to showcase our team, and our outstanding facility.

"We are super-proud that this meet has turned into an event that people from all over the country fly in to compete in, to try and attain qualifying marks for their respective national-championship meets. Our team loves this meet. They love the comfort of competing at home and we take a lot of pride in putting on a great meet."

This is the second year of a two-day meet, which starts on Friday afternoon with an expanded Distance Carnival, the pole vault, and the hammer. The Distance Carnival includes the 1,500-, 5,000- and 10,000-meter races, and the 3,000-meter steeplechase.

The hammer competition will be staged at Western Oregon, starting at 3:30 p.m. The inclement spring weather has unexpectedly delayed the completion of the new hammer area at the Whyte track.

Friday's action starts at 3:30 p.m. with the pole vault. The first track event is the first section of the 3,000-meter steeplechase at 4:15 p.m. Saturday's competition starts at 10 a.m. with the javelin. The first track event is the women's 4x100 relay at 1 p.m.

The High Performance Meet is the lone home appearance for the Beavers, who have set four current school records since starting the outdoor campaign at the Lewis & Clark Spring Break Invitational on March 18.  They also have posted 40 all-time top-10 times or marks.

OSU school-record holders expected to compete are Venessa D'Arpino, who has established new marks in the 100 (11.70), 200 (23.63) and 400 (54.14) this spring; Devin Collins in the 100 (13.45) and 400 (58.64) hurdles; Helen Ann Haun in the pole vault (12-10); Rachel Picknell in the hammer (173-4.50), and McKenzie Byrd in the javelin (150-9.25).

Also, women's basketball standout Mikayla Pivec has joined the team as a javelin specialist, further boosting that already-strong event. She took first in the javelin (147-0), finished fourth in the 1600 meters (4:57.31) and placed fourth in the 800 meters (2:14.56) to lead her Lynnwood High School team to the 2016 Washington 3A state championship.
