Stanford and Utah advance after Day 1 of the Pac-12 Men’s Tennis Championships

OJAI, Calif. - STANFORD and UTAH won their opening-round duals to advance to the second round of the 2017 Pac-12 Men’s Tennis Championships. The Cardinal will face fourth-seeded OREGON on Thursday at 12 p.m. PT, while the Utes will play against third-seeded USC at 3 p.m. PT.

Fifth-seeded Stanford was dominant in securing their victory over No. 8 ARIZONA, winning the match by a score of 4-1. The Cardinal secured the doubles point with wins on the first and second courts, as the duo of Tom Fawcett and Yale Goldberg won on court No. 1 and Sameer Kumar teamed with Michael Genender to win on court No. 2. Kumar picked up the first singles win, as he defeated Arizona’s Trent Botha on court No. 3, 6-2, 6-4. This came after Arizona’s one win from Oliver Plaskett against Stanford’s Brandon Sutter on court 5, 6-4, 6-0. Tom Fawcett followed Kumar with a 7-6, 6-3 win on court No. 1. William Gensen clinched the match for the Cardinal by defeating Arizona’s Andres Reyes on court 6, 6-4, 1-6, 6-1. 

The Utes won a close match against No. 7-seeded Washington in their championship opener, defeating the Utes, 4-1. The Utah doubles pair of Joey Woolley and Santiago Sierra won on court No. 3 by a score of 6-4. The doubles point went to the Utes after Parker Mcguiness and Dan Little won on court No. 2, 6-2,  to secure the point for the Utes. In singles play, it was a battle. Little claimed the first win for Utah defeating Mitch Stewart of Washington, 6-4, 6-1. Gal Hakak claimed the one win for the Huskies next beating Utah’s Slava Shainyan, 6-0, 7-5. Sierra was the third win over Washington’s Enzo Sommer, 6-7, 6-2, 6-0. Woolley clinched the win for the Utes by defeating Washington’s Piers Foley, 6-4, 5-7, 7-5.

The 2017 Pac-12 Tennis Championships continue tomorrow, Thursday, Apr. 27. The semifinals will take place on Friday, Apr. 28, with the championship match scheduled for Saturday, Apr. 29. All matches take place at Libbey Park in Ojai, Calif. For more information, visit pac-12.com/tennischamps
