Beavers Excited For Season-Opening Tournament

CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State women's golf team opens its much-anticipated 2017-18 season at the East West Match Play Challenge this Sunday through Tuesday in Madison, Wis.
 
There will be eight teams in the field playing 36 holes of stroke play to determine the seeding for match play. The top four teams will advance to the championship bracket, while the remaining four will play in the consolation bracket. In addition, eight non-team individuals will compete in stroke play and a match play event of their own.
 
FIELD (8): Oregon State, Iowa State, Michigan, Nebraska, Ohio State, Oregon, UC Davis and Wisconsin.
 
COURSE: The tournament will be held at the par-72, 6,219-yard University Ridge Golf Course.
 
BEAVERS' LINEUP: Oregon State will go with a lineup of senior Susie Cavanagh, juniors Olivia Benzin and Haley Nist, sophomore Nicole Schroeder and freshman Ellie Slama. Sophomore Mari Nishiura will compete as an individual.
 
STROKE PLAY FORMAT: Five players, count the low four scores
 
MATCH PLAY FORMAT: Five players, head-to-head individual play. First team to three points (one point for each individual win). Extra holes will be played as necessary.
 
TEE TIMES: There will be a shotgun start at 9 a.m. CT (7 a.m. PT) on Sunday with 36 holes of continuous play. Match play begins at 9 a.m. CT (7 a.m. PT) on Monday off the first and 10th holes. Tuesday's match play begins at 8:30 a.m. CT (6:30 a.m. PT) off the first and 10th tees.
 
LIVE SCORING: There will be live scoring for the tournament at golfstat.com.

LAST SEASON: During Dawn Shockley's first season as Oregon State's head coach in 2016-17, the Beavers had one of the best years in program history:
 
  • Set the school record for season scoring average (74.28).
  • Won the title at the Rose City Collegiate, the 11th team title in program history.
  • Recorded four top-5 finishes.
  • Defeated Oregon at the Elite 8 Match Play.
  • Finished ahead of Oregon at the Pac-12 Championship to earn a point in the Civil War Series.
  • Finished in eighth place at the Pac-12 Championship, equaling their best finish at the conference tournament since 1998.
  • Advanced to the NCAA Regional Championships for the second time since 2006 and the first time since 2012.
  • Placed seventh at the NCAA Regionals, the highest finish ever for the program, and ahead of seven ranked teams, including No. 2 UCLA.
  • Shot a 10-under 278 in the final round of the NCAA Regionals, five strokes better than the previous school record.
  • Olivia Benzin set the Oregon State single-season scoring average record with a 73.62.
  • Elyse Smidinger set the Oregon State single-round record with a 5-under 67.
  • Susie Cavanagh became the third Oregon State golfer to advance to the NCAA National Championships as an individual (Kathleen Takaishi, 1999 and Anica Yoo, 2015).
 
Two student-athletes earned Pac-12 All-Academic honors, as Elyse Smidinger was named to the Second Team and Olivia Benzin received Honorable Mention recognition
