Beavers Drop Game One of Civil War

April 28, 2017 | Softball

EUGENE, Ore. – Taylor Cotton punched out six batters in the first four innings against No. 6 Oregon, but that wasn't enough as the Ducks recorded four runs in the fourth and fifth innings to take game one of the Civil War, 8-0.

Cotton struck out six of Oregon's first 10 batters and did not allow a hit until the third inning as both teams battle to get on the board first. The Ducks threatened in the first frame by putting runners in score position before back-to-back strikeouts by the lefty smothered the risk.

Oregon started the bottom of the fourth with a solo home run to get on the board first and added to its lead with three more runs in the inning to lead 4-0.

Oregon State put its first runner in scoring position in the top of the fifth after Lovie Lopez singled before stealing second, but that is all the further she would get.

The Ducks loaded the bases in home half of the fifth and ended the game by the mercy rule with a grand slam.

The Beavers registered three hits by Sammi Noland, Alysha Everett and Lovie Lopez. Cotton pitched the 4 1/3 inning game and recorded six strikeouts, while walking just two batters – both in the first frame.

Oregon State (24-20, 6-10 Pac-12) will continue the Civil War Series Saturday afternoon at 1:05 p.m., on the Pac-12 Network.
