Pair of Defenders Selected on Day Two of NFL Draft

April 28, 2017 | Football

Two more UCLA defenders were picked on the second day of the 2017 NFL Draft being held in Philadelphia. Defensive back Fabian Moreau and defensive lineman Eddie Vanderdoes are the 10th and 11th Bruin defensive players to be chosen in the last four drafts.

Moreau was the first Bruin to hear his named called on Day Two, as the third round choice (No. 81 overall) of the Washington Redskins. He was then joined a few picks later by Vanderdoes, who was the No. 88 overall pick in the draft by the Oakland Raiders.

Moreau started 40 career games at cornerback for the Bruins. Last season, he led the team with 10 pass defenses and ranked tied for sixth in the Pac-12 in the category with a 1.0 per game average. Moreau was part of a Bruin secondary in 2016 which gave up a conference low 12 scoring passes during the season. The unit ranked seventh in the nation in team passing efficiency (105.85). The Sunrise, Fla. native was named second-team all-conference as a junior, when he tied for the team lead with eight pass defenses and placed seventh on the squad with 53 tackles. Moreau was named honorable mention all-conference following both his senior and sophomore seasons.

Vanderdoes made 33 career starts along the Bruin defensive front. As a senior, he was named to the Watch Lists for Bednarik, Lombardi, Nagurski and Outland Trophy awards. Vanderdoes earned honorable mention all-conference honors after registering 29 tackles last season, with a high of five in games versus USC and Texas A&M. The native of Auburn, Calif. ranked eighth on the team in 2014 with 50 tackles, including a best of nine stops in a game against Utah. In his freshman season, he was credited with 39 tackles and posted a high of 11 stops at Stanford, the most by a Bruin defensive lineman in a game since 1992. He totaled 13.5 tackles for loss and 4.0 sacks in his career and also scored a pair of rushing touchdowns in spot duty on offense.

Together with the first-round selection of Takkarist McKinley, this marks the first pair of Bruin defensive linemen chosen in the same draft since Dave Ball and Rodney Leisle were taken in the fifth round of the 2004 Draft. Moreau's selection, as the No. 81 player in the draft, is the highest for a Bruin defensive back since Rahim Moore was the 45th selection overall in the second round of the 2011 draft by the Denver Broncos.
