Beavers Create Chances, but Fall to Arizona

Wildcats take 2-0 win at Lorenz Field

CORVALLIS – The Oregon State women's soccer team created a number of scoring chances, but was unable to find the net Friday evening, as the Beavers fell to Arizona 2-0 at Lorenz Field in Corvallis.

"I felt like we played a very good match," said Oregon State head coach Linus Rhode. "They took their chances early on, and they finished them well. But I thought we had some really good looks, and in the second half we created some really good sequences. I told the team, this was a good game of soccer, and we just need to focus on the next one."

Oregon State tallied 12 shots in the match, led by senior Emma Jones with six. Natalie Higgins and Allison Pantuso followed her with two attempts a piece.

Goalkeeper Bella Geist recorded nine saves, as she continues her ascent up the Pac-12 career saves list. The senior now has 372 career stops, bringing her within one of Tawni Martineau (Utah) for fourth in conference history.

Jones came up with the first Oregon State chance of the match in the 11th minute, firing one just over the bar from the left side of the box. Arizona took the lead less than two minutes later, knocking in a rebound off a shot initially saved by Geist.

The Beavers had a flurry of chances in the 19th minute, as Jones came up with a pair of shots, followed by an attempt from Taylor Lemmond. The Wildcats followed that with another goal a minute later to go in front by a pair, as Arizona took a two-goal lead into the break.

Jones took aim from distance just seconds into the second half, but her shot drifted wide right. Higgins followed that up with a shot two minutes later, but it was blocked. Nicole Nickerson fired an attempt from outside the box in the 53rd minute, but the Arizona keeper was there for an easy save.

Oregon State pressed forward down the closing stretch looking to pull one back, creating a handful of chances, but ultimately coming up short.

Oregon State will hit the road next week, when it heads to the Bay Area for a matchup with No. 18 California on Thursday.
