Canning Shuts Out Oregon, 6-0

EUGENE, Ore. – Griffin Canning threw a complete game shutout with 10 strikeouts, while Daniel Rosica went 2-for-3 with a RBI-double and Zander Clarke drove in two runs as the UCLA baseball team won the series opener at Oregon, 6-0, on Thursday from PK Park.

Canning (7-3) recorded his sixth win in conference play and posted his third complete game shutout of the season with the previous two coming on the road at Stanford and at USC. He scattered four hits and two walks and tallied 10 strikeouts.

UCLA opened up the scoring with three runs in third inning as Chase Strumpf drew a bases-loaded walk followed by Clarke driving in two runs with a single through the left-side of the infield.

The Bruins pushed its lead to 4-0 in the fourth inning as Ryan Kreidler scored from third base on a ground ball to the second baseman off the bat of Daniel Amaral. UCLA added two more runs in the eighth inning as Kreidler drove in Michael Toglia with a single to left field followed by a RBI-double down the left-field line off the bat of Daniel Rosica for a 6-0 advantage.

Oregon's David Peterson (11-4) suffered the loss allowing four runs on seven hits in seven innings of work and struck out nine batters.

UCLA (29-24, 18-10) finished the game with six runs on 10 hits and no errors, while Oregon (29-24, 11-17) ended with no runs on four hits with one error.

The Bruins and Ducks will game two of this three-game Pac-12 series on Friday starting at 6 p.m. (PT) from PK Park. The game will be streamed live on Pac-12 Plus and on Twitter.

Game Notes: Griffin Canning passed Ron Rasmussen (2010) for seventh on UCLA's single season strikeout list with 134 this season … Canning remains in sixth place in program history in strikeouts with 295 … Canning has totaled 10 or more strikeouts in eight starts this season and the sixth time in last seven starts … Canning has thrown 7.0 or more innings in seven-straight starts … Canning tallied his second consecutive complete game and eighth of his career … Zander Clarke tied a season-high with a pair of RBIs … Daniel Amaral recorded his team-best 16th multi-hit game of the season, while Ryan Kreidler collected his ninth … Daniel Rosica tallied his third double of the year.
