EUGENE, Ore. – Oregon was shut out by UCLA starting pitcher Griffin Canning in a 6-0 loss in the Pac-12 series opener on Thursday at PK Park.

How It Happened: Canning (7-3) kept the Ducks' bats in check all night, allowing just four hits while striking out 10 with two walks. He didn't allow an Oregon runner to reach second base until the ninth inning when the Ducks put multiple runners on for the first time all game.

The Bruins (29-24, 18-10 Pac-12) capitalized on a pair of walks and a hit batter by Oregon starter David Peterson (11-4) scoring three runs in the third inning. Chase Strumpf drew a two-out walk with the bases loaded to score the first run before Zander Clarke delivered a two-run single.

An RBI groundout pushed across another UCLA run in the fourth inning, stretching the lead to 4-0.

UCLA added some insurance with two runs in the eighth inning off Oregon reliever James Acuna. Ryan Kreidler drove in a run with a two-out single and Daniel Rosica doubled home another run one batter later.

Box Score Notes: Peterson battled through seven innings, giving up four runs on seven hits while striking out nine with two walks … Kyle Kasser extended his hitting streak to 13 games, tied for the third longest streak in program history with Brett Thomas (2013), Ryon Healy (2013) and Danny Pulfer (2011) … Morgan McCullough recorded his 12th multi-hit game which ranks fourth on the team, finishing 2-for-4 … Parker Kelly threw a scoreless ninth inning with one strikeout.

On Deck: The Ducks (29-24, 11-17 Pac-12) and Bruins play game two of the series Friday at 6 p.m. at PK Park. Oregon will send Matt Mercer (5-7, 3.44) to the mound while UCLA is scheduled to throw Jake Bird (5-3, 3.02).
