Holmes, Wilson Win USATF Junior Outdoor Titles

June 24, 2017 | Track & Field

Two Bruins won national titles at the USATF Junior Outdoor Championships in Sacramento, Calif. this weekend. Sophomore Isaiah Holmes captured the high jump title, and incoming freshman Alyssa Wilson took the hammer throw title.

Holmes, the 2017 Pac-12 high jump champion, set a new personal best in winning the USATF Junior Outdoor title, clearing 7-1 ¾ (2.18) on his first attempt at that height. He also earned a Top 10 finish in the long jump, placing ninth with a jump of 23-1 ¾ (7.05). With his high jump victory, Holmes secured a bid to represent the U.S. at the Pan American Junior Championships in Peru in July.

Wilson earned Top 5 finishes in all three events in which she competed. After a fifth-place showing in the discus (167-8) on Thursday, she placed second in the shot put (53-3) and won the hammer throw (185-11), earning a roster spot at the Pan American Junior Championships on those two events.

Two other Bruins recorded Top 10 finishes, with Nate Esparza placing fourth in the shot put with a personal best 19.83 (65-0 ¾) and Chris Morzenti finishing sixth in the 1500m in a time of 3:53.70.

At the USATF Outdoor Championships, also in Sacramento, Misana Viltz finished 22nd overall in the 110m hurdles.
