Pac-12 baseball season ends in historic fashion

NCAA TOURNAMENT: Four Pac-12 baseball teams earned berths to the 2017 NCAA Tournament. No 1-seeded Oregon State was joined by Arizona, Stanford and UCLA. Stanford and OSU both hosted NCAA regionals. The Beavs were the only team to advance onto the Super Regional.

Oregon State again hosted for its Super Regional. The Beavs beat Vanderbilt in two games, advancing onto the College World Series in Omaha.

The College World Series is played in a double elimination format. Oregon State came back from a 5-1 deficit to win its first CWS game against Cal State Fullerton, 6-5. The Beavs then played LSU and won 13-1. LSU advanced through the elimination bracket to face OSU again. LSU defeated Oregon State in two games, ending the Beavs CWS run.

RECORD SETTING: Despite not advancing to the College World Series Final, Oregon State’s season ended in a historic fashion. The Beavs 56-6 record allowed a .903 winning percentage for the season. OSU became the fifth NCAA baseball team all-time to end the season with above a .900 winning percentage and are now tied for fourth.

SEASON RECAP: Pac-12 baseball teams ended the season 171-91 (.653) against other conferences. The Conference had four NCAA Tournament berths and racked in many postseason honors, including Oregon State’s head coach Pat Casey winning NCBWA National Coach of the Year.

ARIZONA finished the season fourth in the conference with a 16-14 record and 38-21 season record. JJ Matijevic was named the Pac-12 Batting Champion after leading the Conference in batting average, .389. The Wildcats tied for second most MLB draftees in the Pac-12 with six student-athletes drafted.

ARIZONA STATE finished the season tied for 10th with an 8-22 Pac-12 record and 23-32 season record. The Sun Devils had one student-athlete in the 2017 MLB Draft, Connor Higgins was drafted by the Texas Rangers. On April 17th, Gage Canning was selected the Pac-12 Player of the week.

CALIFORNIA ended up tied for fifth in the Pac-12 with a 15-15 Conference record and a 25-29 season record. Andrew Vaughn was the Pac-12 Freshman of the Year. Vaughn appeared on the Collegiate Baseball, NCBWA, and Baseball America Freshman All-America teams. Two Golden Bears were drafted in 2017 MLB draft.

OREGON was eighth in the Pac-12 with a 12-18 conference record and a 30-25 season record. Oregon’s David Peterson was selected the NCBWA March Pitcher of the Month and May 2nd NCBWA Pitcher of the Week. He was one of three Oregon student-athletes to be drafted in the 2017 MLB draft.

OREGON STATE is the 2017 Pac-12 Champion, ending with a 27-3 conference record and 56-6 season record. The Beavs solidified their Conference title the same game as head coach Pat Casey’s 1,000th career win. Casey was named the NCWBA National Coach of the Year. The Beavs made it all the way to the College World Series, but lost to LSU in the final game to determine who moved on to the CWS Final. The Beavs 56-6 season record garnered a .903 winning percentage, good enough for tied for fourth on the NCAA all-time list.

STANFORD finished the season second in the Pac-12 with a 21-9 conference record and earned a berth to the NCAA Tournament. The Cardinal hosted their regional, but did not make it on. Head coach Mark Marquess finished his last season coaching after 41 years at the helm of the Stanford baseball program. Stanford had the most student-athletes drafted in the 2017 MLB draft of the Pac-12 with 10.

UCLA was third in the conference with a 19-11 record and 30-27 season record. UCLA earned a berth to the NCAA Tournament and competed in the Long Beach Regional, but did not move on. UCLA was tied for second in the most student-athletes in the 2017 MLB draft with six.

USC finished the season tied for 10th in the conference with an 8-22 conference record and a 21-34 season record. The Trojans had two student-athletes drafted in the 2017 MLB draft.

UTAH finished the season tied for fifth in the Pac-12 with a 15-15 conference record and a 27-24 season record. The Utes had four student-athletes drafted in the 2017 MLB draft. Utah received two Pac-12 weekly honors with Hunter Simmons and Chandler Anderson receiving Player of the Week honors.

WASHINGTON was seventh in the Pac-12 with a 14-16 conference record and a 25-29 season record. Four student-athletes from UW were drafted in the 2017 MLB draft. On May 15th, Noah Bremer received Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week honors.

WASHINGTON STATE finished the season ninth in the Pac-12 with a 10-20 conference record and a 24-29 season record. WSU had three student-athletes drafted in the 2017 MLB draft.
