Roundup: Andy Lopez to be inducted into ABCA Hall of Fame

Former Arizona baseball coach Andy Lopez will be inducted into the ABCA Hall of Fame, it was announced earlier in the week (Arizona Desert Swarm). Lopez took Arizona, Pepperdine and Florida to the College World Series and won national titles at Arizona and Pepperdine.

On Thursday morning in Nevada, a parole board voted to release O.J. Simpson in October. The former Trojan running back has served over nine years in prison after being convicted of a Las Vegas armed robbery in 2008.

Kevin Hampton of the Corvallis Gazette-Times reports that Oregon State wide receiver Seth Collins will be ready to go when fall camp starts next week, as head coach Gary Andersen said as much in a recent chat with the media. He missed the end of the 2016 season and 2017 spring practice with an undisclosed illness.

Adam Jude believes that Washington is the clear favorite in the Pac-12 North for the upcoming football season as he releases his Pac-12 North poll in this piece for The Seattle Times.

Meanwhile, Matt Brown of Sports on Earth writes that you shouldn’t count Stanford out of the Pac-12 race. The Cardinal has won at least 10 games in six of the last seven seasons and finished 2016 on a six-game winning streak.

Colorado running back Phillip Lindsay was named to the Doak Walker Award watch list on Thursday (BuffZone.com). Other running backs from the Pac-12 include Kalen Ballage (Arizona State), Myles Gaskin (Washington), Ronald Jones, II (USC), Bryce Love (Stanford), Jamal Morrow (Washington State), Ryan Nall (Oregon State), Demario Richard (Arizona State), Armand Shyne (Utah) and Tre Watson (Cal).

All these watch lists coming out, and it’s tough to keep track of who is up for what. Luckily for Utes fans, Utah football provides us with this list of Utah football players on preseason award watch lists.

Washington State quarterback Luke Falk was also named to the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award watch list in addition to the Davey O’Brien Award watch list (WSUCougars.com).

Arizona State held its annual breaking of the rock ceremony Wednesday to signify the end of summer workouts and the start of fall camp next week (The State Press).

UCLA men’s basketball will face Creighton in the Hall of Fame Classic in Kansas City on Nov. 20. The Bruins will then play either Baylor or Wisconsin the following evening.

Ryan Gorcey of the San Francisco Chronicle features new Cal baseball coach Mike Neu. He was the head coach at Pacific the last two years and was the pitching coach at Cal from 2012-15.
