Cardinal hosts Pacific in NCAA Tournament rematch

STANFORD, Calif. – No. 1 Stanford will have one more exhibition to prepare for the 2017 campaign when it hosts Pacific on Saturday at 7 p.m.
 
Admission to the match is free and there will be locker room tours from 4:30-5 p.m. and a free youth clinic run by Cardinal coaches and players two hours before the game on the practice fields adjacent to El Camino Real. The nation's most successful collegiate soccer program over the past three seasons, Stanford is 46-8-11 (.792) since 2014, has won back-to-back national championships and three consecutive Pac-12 titles.

Free Youth Clinic

Saturday's free clinic will be run by Cardinal coaches and players from 5-6 p.m. on Maloney Field, directly behind the east side of Cagan Stadium adjacent to El Camino Real and is for youth ages 5-12. Those interested in participating should email smsoccer@stanford.edu so the program can prepare stations and drills for the correct number of individuals.

Prior to the clinic fans can tour the Cardinal's locker room at Cagan Stadium from 4:30-5 p.m. The entrance will be off Maloney Field behind the east stands at Cagan Stadium.

The first 50 fans through the gates will also receive a t-shirt celebrating the program's back-to-back national championships.

All youth eighth grade and below can also participate in halftime penalty kicks  on the field by checking in at Stanford Athletics table on general admission (west) side of Cagan Stadium with 35:00 on the clock in the first half. 


Promotional Calendar

Stanford's regular-season home opener against No. 14 Creighton on Friday, Sept. 1 will be Cardinal Kids Day and fans can receive up to two free youth tickets with the purchase of a paid adult ticket. The first 1,000 fans in attendance will also receive the t-shirt celebrating the program's back-to-back national championships.

Cardinal Quick Hitters

• Stanford is one of six programs to win back-to-back national championships and was the first to do it in a dozen years.
• This season the Cardinal will attempt to become just the second program to win three straight NCAA titles (Virginia; 1991-94).
• Stanford on the 2016 title without allowing a goal throughout the entire tournament, becoming just the third program to ever do that (Wisconsin – 1995, San Francisco 1976).
• The Cardinal will head into this season with an active shutout streak of 548:29.
• Stanford is the only school to return multiple 2016 All-Americans in 2017 (Tomas Hilliard-Arce and Foster Langsdorf).
• The Cardinal returns nine of its 11 starters from a year ago, 100% of its goals scored and 91.7% of its assists (33-of-36).
• Stanford has also won Pac-12 titles each of the past three seasons, the program's first conference three-peat since it won four straight University and Club Soccer League championships from 1919-23.


Stanford Punishes Pilots

Stanford used a first-half flurry to win its exhibition opener last Sunday afternoon. Tomas Hilliard-Arce, Corey Baird and Collin Liberty found the back of the net on a trio of set pieces and the Cardinal beat visiting Portland 3-0.


NCAA Tournament Rematch

Foster Langsdorf and Tomas Hilliard-Arce scored, Andrew Epstein made a huge save in the 63rd minute and the No. 5 Cardinal advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament with a 2-0 win over Pacific at Cagan Stadium on Nov. 20, 2016.

Preseason No. 1

Stanford, topped the United Soccer Coaches Preseason Poll and is followed in the top five by No. 2 Wake Forest, No. 3 Denver, No. 4 North Carolina and No. 5 Clemson.

The Cardinal were also the pick in the Pac-12 when the conference announced its preseason coaches poll. Stanford tallied 24 points and four first-place votes and was followed by UCLA, Washington, San Diego State, Oregon State and California.


Watch Lists

All-Americans Tomas Hilliard-Arce and Foster Langsdorf are two of 31 players on the 2017 MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List. The Cardinal is the only school in the country with multiple players recognized.

Stanford also placed a league-best four on the All-Pac-12 preseason team in seniors Corey Baird, Tomas Hilliard-Arce, Foster Langsdorf and Drew Skundrich.
