Huskies Knock Off Cross-Town Foe Seattle, 2-0

SEATTLE - Handwalla Bwana scored a goal and assisted on another as Washington picked up a big road win, knocking off No. 24 Seattle U 2-0 in front of a capacity crowd of 1,800 at Championship Field on the Seattle U campus.

The Huskies pick up their fourth-straight win to close out the non-conference portion of their schedule at 7-2-0. The Redhawks fall to 6-2-0 and see their NCAA DI-best 21-match home winning streak come to an end.

After a scoreless first half, Washington came out slow in the second, allowing Seattle U a number of early scoring chances. After weathering the storm, the Huskies rallied and broke the ice in the 56th minute.

Scott Menzies sent a nice pass through the Seattle U defense to an on-rushing Bwana, who took a great first touch to beat the final defender and tucked a quick shot to the far post for the goal.

Bwana would add an assist to his tally in the 74th minute. The sophomore curled a corner kick right into the middle of the box where an unmarked Quentin Pearson's diving header blew it past the keeper and into the back of the net for the two-goal advantage.

Seattle ramped up the offense over the final 15 minutes, peppering the UW goal with seven shots down the stretch after recording just six to that points. Sophomore netminder Seif Kerawala was up to the task and made four of his game-high six saves to earn the cleansheet--his fourth of the season.

"I believe the rankings are the rankings, but I believe they are a top-10 level team as are we," said head coach Jamie Clark. "So getting a win on the road against those teams is tough."

The first half was a midfield battle with the teams combining for 5 shots over the first 13 minutes but only 7 the rest of the way. Washington had the two great chances to score, both coming from Scott Menzies, who entered the match in the 27th minute and again got involved quickly. Menzies got a nice lob from French right in the middle of the box but his header was saved by the Seattle keeper.

Menzies would get another great chance in the final minute of the half as French again gave him a perfect lob. But his off-balance shot was tipped just wide by the goalie.

Seattle U had a pair of shots in the fourth minute, taking two shots inside the box only to have them blocked by Husky defenders. The Redhawks lone other opportunity to score came in the 41st minute on a counter after Menzies' first scoring chance. After a nice move, Noe Meza took a shot from just inside the box but hooked it right and into the crowd.

"Both halves we started slow and then grew into the game," said Clark. "The beauty of the game was that right when they started getting a hold of it is when we get our second. And when you get your second its just hang on from there."

With the victory, Washington retains the Western Athletic Club/101 Club Cup for the second-straight season after knocking off Seattle 2-1 at UW last year.

"This was such a great event and special thanks to the WAC/101 Club for hosting the game," said Clark. "It was first class and a great atmosphere.

"If you could have said we'd be 7-2 after non-conference we'd have been delighted," said Clark. "But now we really are focused on getting our Pac-12 title back."

Washington opens up Pac-12 play next week, hosting Oregon State on Sunday, Oct. 1 at 3:00 p.m. at Husky Soccer Stadium.
