TEMPE, Ariz. – Erica McCall notched her sixth double-double of the season, Karlie Samuelson led all scorers with 16 and No. 13 Stanford scored the game's final six points to begin Pac-12 play with a 64-57 win at No. 18 Arizona State on Friday night.
 
The Cardinal (11-2, 1-0) had an eight point lead midway through the fourth quarter after Alanna Smith stole a pass and went coast-to-coast to put Stanford up 56-48. Arizona State (9-3, 0-1) cut the deficit to one, 58-57, with 1:19 to go following a 9-2 run that featured a pair of 3-point plays from Quinn Dornstauder and Reili Richardson.
 
Stanford, which came into the night shooting 64 percent from the line, would make each of its six free throws in the final 71 seconds to up its record to 28-3 in Pac-12 openers.
 
Down two after a McCall free throw, Arizona State mishandled the inbounds pass that went out of bounds. The Sun Devils were initially awarded possession until the referees conferred at the monitor and correctly reversed the call to give Stanford the ball.
 
The Cardinal missed on its first layup attempt, but McCall tied up ASU on the rebound and Stanford retained control on the jump ball. Inbounding under the basket, McCall leaked to the corner, received the pass and was hit on the arm going up for a 3-pointer by Dornstauder. She'd sink all three, Karlie Samuelson would make two more later and Stanford earned its first road win over a top 25 team since Feb. 2015.
 
Arizona State had its last lead when Sophie Brunner's layup with 2:13 left in the third quarter put the Sun Devils up 42-41. Samuelson hit one from deep during a 7-0 run to close the quarter and Stanford held ASU without a field goal for more than five minutes to take a 50-44 advantage with 7:16 remaining.
 
The Cardinal shot 44 percent from the floor, made 12 of its 16 free throws and was 6-of-10 from behind the arc.
 
Arizona State held a 42-31 rebounding edge and outscored Stanford 21-8 on second-chance points, but the Cardinal scored 19 points off 16 Sun Devil turnovers and received some big contributions off the bench. DiJonai Carrington played six third-quarter minutes, scored five points and had two rebounds. Carrington's corner 3-pointer midway through the third quarter, her first of the season, broke a 38-38 tie.
 
Marta Sniezek chipped in seven points, three rebounds and three assists and Alanna Smith tied a career high with four blocks in addition to her timely steal and finish.
 
McCall's 12-point, 11-rebound double-double was her 24^th in Stanford's last 47 games. Samuelson played all 40 minutes had scored her 16 on 6-of-9 shooting, including 2-of-3 from deep.
 
The win was the 991^st of Tara VanDerveer's career and Stanford upped its conference record on the road the past 10 seasons to 72-10. The Cardinal also moved to 65-30 (.684) against ranked teams since 2007-08.
 
Stanford is 14-7 against ranked Pac-12 teams the past five seasons. From 2000-12 the Cardinal only played 22 such games, going 16-6.
