Roundup: Kathryn Plummer named AVCA Player of the Year; Stanford's repeat bid falls short

Stanford

Stanford women’s volleyball lost to Florida in five sets in the national semifinals Thursday night in Kansas City, erasing a 2-0 set deficit and inching within 11-9 in the fourth set before Florida put the Cardinal away for good. But on the positive, Kathryn Plummer the AVCA DI National Player of the Year Friday morning.

Washington

Washington will retire Isaiah Thomas’ number on Feb. 15 when the Huskies host Utah, the school announced Thursday. Has to be the best Mr. Irrelevant in NBA history.

Oregon

Oregon running back Royce Freeman will not play in the Las Vegas Bowl on Saturday against Boise State (12:30 p.m. PT, ABC), head coach Mario Cristobal announced Thursday (Kyle Bonagura on the link). ESPN NFL Draft guru Mel Kiper Jr. has Freeman as the No. 7-ranked draft-eligible RB.

Oregon State

Seth Collins has been granted his release by Oregon State and is no longer with the team, the school announced Thursday (Danny Moran on the link). Collins played in three games in 2017 and missed the rest of the year with what Oregon State deemed a “health-related issue.”

Utah

Lynn Worthy notes that Utah coach Kyle Whittingham is optimistic that quarterback Tyler Huntley will be able to play in the Heart of Dallas Bowl against West Virginia.

USC

Quarterback Sam Darnold and linebacker Uchenna Nwosu were named USC’s co-MVPs at the team’s awards banquet Wednesday night. Joey Kaufman has the full rundown of award winners in the preceding link.

UCLA

UCLA put six men's water polo players placed six players on the ACWPC All-American list Thursday. Among the honorees were Max Irving, Alex Roelse, Max Farmer, Alex Wolf, Nicolas Saveljic and Jack Grover, while coach Adam Wright was named ACWPC Coach of the Year.

Washington State

Zach Barnett of FootballScoop is reporting that Washington State defensive coordinator Alex Grinch is a candidate to join the Ohio State staff once FBS programs will be able to add a 10th assistant to the staff on Jan. 9. This would be a huge loss for the Cougs if it does happen.

California

Cal men’s water polo star Luca Cupido was named the ACWPC National Player of the Year on Thursday. He’s gotta be the front-runner for the Cutino Award as well.

Arizona State
