RENO, Nev. - After missing over a month due to injury, redshirt junior Paul Fox returned to action for the Cardinal and placed sixth at the Reno Tournament of Champions, Sunday.
Fox, who is ranked 10th at 157 pounds, was the only Stanford wrestler to place in the tournament. The Cardinal finished 11th as a team with 43.5 points.
Fox started the day off with a fall in 54 seconds over Providence's Isiah Yates. He reached the quarterfinals with a 3-2 decision against Oregon State's Hunter Willits, where he was edged, 5-4, by Dayton Racer of Clackamas. Fox also picked up a 5-2 decision over Nick Mergen of North Dakota State in the consolation bracket before advancing to the fifth-place bout. Tied 6-6 with Air Force's Alex Mossing, Fox gave up the escape in the overtime period for his third loss of the season. He is now 7-3.
Also reaching the quarterfinals for the Cardinal were Isaiah Locsin (141 pounds), Requir van der Merwe (149 pounds) and Jared Hill (165 pounds). Locsin dropped his quarterfinal bout to second-ranked Kevin Jack of NC State, 9-2. van der Merwe came up short to No. 17 Beau Donahue of NC State, 3-2, while Hill fell 10-7 to Campbell's Quentin Perez.
Redshirt sophomore Travor Rasmussen went 5-1 at 285 pounds, but had his tournament cut short due to the new NCAA rule which only allows wrestlers to compete in six matches per day. He won four straight matches in the consolation bracket before having to give up a no contest to Cal Poly's Spencer Empey. Rasmussen is now 7-4 on the year.
Up next, Stanford will travel to Chatanooga, Tennessee to ring in the New Year at the Southern Scuffle, Jan. 1-2.Â
