Cal Opens Hornet Invitational With Hammer
The First Day Of The Hornet Invitational Featured Three Top-Five Hammer Finishes
SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Cal track & field sported three top-five finishes in the two hammer throw events as they opened competition at the Hornet Invitational at Hornet Stadium.
With only a few Bears in competition on the first day of the meet, the action focused on the hammer throw. On the men's side,
Silviu Bocancea took first with a mark of 201-10.5. Bocancea won his second consecutive hammer throw competition to begin his Cal career. He won the Cal Outdoor Opener with a mark of 186-6.00 two weeks ago.
On the women's side, senior
Destiny Parker took third place as she recorded her best throw on her final attempt. Parker launched her throw 184-11, bettering her first attempt of 183-9. She was followed by senior
Emma Seyer who finished in fifth. Seyer's best throw came on her fourth attempt as she tossed the hammer, 173-6.
Imani Bierly finished 11
th out of the 56 competitors as she notched a throw of 144-9 on her first attempt of the afternoon.
The other Bear to begin competition on Friday was
Asha Culhane, who was competing her first career heptathlon. Culhane sits in fifth place after one day with 2666 points. Culhane opened the day with a time of 15.98 in the 100m hurdles to collect 717 points. She followed that by clearing the bar at 5-1.00 on her second attempt of the high jump competition. She collected 558 points with a fourth-place finish in the shot put with a throw of 34-3.00. Culhane finished the first day with a wind-aided time of 26.99 in the 200m to record 713 points.
The Bears will return to action tomorrow as the rest of the squad heads to Hornet Stadium for a full day of action. Events begin at 9:30 a.m. with the women's javelin and women's discus competitions.
