Koumontzis Drafted by Calgary in 4th Round of NHL Draft

DALLAS, Texas – Incoming Sun Devil men's hockey player Demetrios Koumontzis was selected by the Calgary Flames in the 4th round (108^th overall selection) of the 2018 NHL Draft on Saturday, June 22^nd.
 
Koumontzis signed his National Letter of Intent to ASU with the fall 2017 signing class and entered the draft ranked No. 136 among North American skaters. During the 2017-18 season, Koumontzis averaged nearly a goal per game with 20 goals and 21 assists in 24 games for Edina High School, while adding an additional two goals and two assists in three postseason games.
 
"We're very proud of Komo," said head coach Greg Powers. "We've known him for a long time as he grew up playing hockey right here in Arizona. It's always great when local players get drafted and to have it be a Sun Devil is icing on the cake. We can't wait to get him in the Maroon and Gold."
 
Prior to his first Minnesota high school season, he led the Minnesota Elite League in assists (33) and total points (49) through 21 games played. In recognition of his noticeable first and final high school season, he was a finalist for the Minnesota Mr. Hockey award, which is annually given to the state's most outstanding high school player.
 
A Phoenix-native, Koumontzis played for the Phoenix Jr. Coyotes U16 squad for two seasons (2015-17) before taking his talents to Edina and the Minnesota High School Hockey League. He suited up in the desert for 43 games and notched 17 goals and 21 assists for 38 total points.
 
Koumontzis' selection makes him the highest drafted Sun Devil in program history and ASU's second draftee in just three seasons of NCAA Division I status. The first drafted Sun Devil is current goaltender Joey Daccord, who was taken in the 2015 NHL Draft by the Ottawa Senators in the 7^th round (199^th overall selection).
