Pac-12 Women's Lacrosse Weekly Rundown - March 21, 2023

This Week 
  • No. 18 USC (6-2, 1-0) hosts Colorado (3-4, 2-0) on Friday, March 24 in a rematch of the 2019 Pac-12 Tournament Championship, in which USC won its first Pac-12 title in a 12-3 victory.
    • Colorado, who has won three straight, is 1-2 on the road thus far this season with a win coming against Ohio State.
  • Arizona State (1-5, 0-1) battles Oregon (1-5, 0-2) in Tempe, Arizona.
    • The Sun Devils have a five-game win streak against the Ducks.
    • Oregon topped Arizona State on the road in 2018 behind four goals each by Jill Zubillaga and Shannon Williams.
  • Stanford (4-4, 2-1) travels to No. 2 Northwestern (8-1) on Sunday as the Cardinal begin to wrap up non-conference play in the 11th meeting between these two teams.
    • The Cardinal defeated the lacrosse powerhouse on the road in 2003.
  • On Sunday, the Buffaloes continue their road trip against Arizona State, and USC wraps up its homestand against Oregon as league play continues.
Last Week
  • Colorado earned its 100th win in program history after edging then-No. 21 Stanford, 17-15. 
    • A total of eight Buffs recorded at least one goal, with Sam McGee netting five.
    • The victory marked career win No. 100 for head coach Ann Elliott Whidden.
    • Stanford’s Ashley Humphrey recorded four goals and five assists, her fourth career contest with double-digit points.
  • The Buffaloes followed up with a 20-3 win against California, which is the largest margin of victory by a Pac-12 squad this season, and largest for Colorado since 2017 when they defeated Stetson, 22-3.
    • Ashley Stokes led all scorers with four goals and two assists in Sunday’s victory.
  • No. 18 USC began its conference slate with a 17-6 win over Arizona State.
    • The Trojans held the Sun Devils to their second-lowest goal total of the year. 
    • Ella Heaney, Shelby Tilton and Claudia Shevitz each scored four goals.
    • Kaylon Buckner found the back of the net and leads the Sun Devils with 13 goals.
  • The Golden Bears got a big road win over Oregon, never trailing in the 13-12 result.
    • Alicia Souliotis made two huge saves in the final 4:30 of regulation to seal the victory and ended up with 10 saves in the game.
  • The Cardinal bounced back against Oregon, 18-8.
    • Stanford scored 10 goals in the second half, including a 6-0 advantage in the third period. Sarah Jaques scored a career-high six goals.
    • Oregon’s Gabby Cleveland also added a career-high six goals.
Notes and Numbers
  • USC remained at No. 18 in the latest IWLCA poll, and Stanford is receiving votes.
    • It is the first time since week five last season that Stanford is not in the IWLCA top 25.
  • Colorado head coach Whidden notched her 100th-career win, and has the 44th-most wins among active Division I coaches.
  • Stanford's Humphrey is the active leader in points per game at 6.12 and assists per game at 4.12 in Division I.
  • USC ranks fourth in the country with 11.86 caused turnovers per game, while Oregon ranks fifth in fewest turnovers per game at 11.20. The Trojans and Ducks square off on Sunday.
  • Arizona State is second in the nation in clearing percentage at .957.
  • In four of the five contests last week, the winning team scored at least 17 goals. Colorado netted 20, marking the third contest this season in which a Pac-12 team scored 20 or more.
  • After a record-setting season in 2022 and a strong start to 2023, Humphrey has moved into second place on the Pac-12’s career assists list with 111, trailing former Arizona State attacker Emily Glagolev who had 151. Humphrey is eighth all-time in career points with 165.
  • Oregon’s Morgan McCarthy has scored in 18-straight games, and has scored multiple goals 10 times during that streak.
2023 Pac-12 Tournament
  • The 2023 Pac-12 Women’s Lacrosse Tournament will take place in Berkeley, California from May 3-6, and the tournament champion will receive the Pac-12’s automatic bid to the 29-team 2023 NCAA Tournament. All five contests of the 2023 Pac-12 Women’s Lacrosse Tournament are slated to be broadcast on Pac-12 Network and the Pac-12 Now app. The five contests are part of 17 Pac-12 Networks will broadcast this season.
