Mar 28, 2024
Destin Lasco took home his sixth national title on Thursday night, winning the 200 individual medley.

INDIANAPOLIS – Day two of the NCAA Men's Swimming & Diving Championships saw the California swimming & diving team earn another national title. Destin Lasco was victorious in the 200-yard individual medley setting a new American record in the event. Thursday night saw four other Golden Bears earn All-American honors as well at the IU Natatorium.

Lasco takes home his sixth career National Championship – the first in the 200 IM. He was a runner-up the previous two years and took third in 2021. He broke through in a big way tonight, setting a new American Record with a time of 1:37.91.

"I knew the field was going to take it out on the front half, so I needed to be good in the back half and use it to my advantage," Lasco said, poolside.

The win gives the senior from Linwood, NJ his third career individual crown. Later in the meet, he helped the Golden Bears finish second in the 200 free relay. Cal entered the event seeded eighth and finished second just a touch behind winner Florida. The Bears quartet of Jack Alexy, Bjorn Seeliger, Liam Bell, and Lasco finished with a time of 1:13.86, just four-hundredths of a second off the program record set by the same lineup at last year's NCAA Championships.

Friday night's finals got underway with Gabriel Jett earning All-American honors in the 500 free, he finished with a time of 4:10.68. In the 50 freestyle, the Bears had two All-Americans in Alexy and Seeliger. Alexy finished third with a time of 18.38 – a personal best in the event and the third fastest time in program history. Seeliger captured fifth with a time of 18.54.

Through seven events, Arizona State leads with 169 points. Cal is in second with 135 points. Rounding out the top five is Florida (161), Indiana (107), and Texas (106).

The meet resumes tomorrow at 7:00 a.m. PT with the prelims of the 400 IM, 100 butterfly, 200 free, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke and the 3-meter dive.
