SAN FRANCISCO – Sampson Zheng and Ethan Fang finished the first round of The Goodwin inside the top-10 individually after pacing the California men's golf team through the first 18 holes at TPC Harding Park on Thursday afternoon.
Zheng carded a 2-under-par 68 and is tied for fifth place with Fang close behind in a tie for eighth following his 1-under 69. The duo is in striking distance of the individual lead with 36 holes remaining; both Golden Bears are within three strokes of clubhouse leader Jonathan Nielsen (-4) of Clemson. Cal shot a 5-over 285 and is tied for ninth after the opening round, but finds itself just six shots behind a three-way tie for first place between Stanford (-1), Tennessee (-1) and Georgia (-1).
Zheng posted his fifth consecutive round of par or better, tallying birdies on holes 3, 7 and 16 to overcome a bogey on 11. Fang – who has three top-10 finishes in four events played this spring – earned birdies on holes 5, 7, 10 and 16.
Eric Lee (+3) was 1-under through hole 8 but fell back into a tie for 68th with four bogeys over his final 10 holes.
