UP NEXT: Utah Takes on Colorado in Pac-12 Tournament

SALT LAKE CITY  – The Utah women's tennis team heads to the Pac-12 Championships as the No. 8 seed. The Utes are set to take on the No. 9 seeded Colorado Buffs on Wednesday, April 24 at 10 a.m. (MT).

LAST TIME OUT
The Utes wrapped up their final regular season matches last weekend with a 4-2 win over Colorado. Utah narrowly dropped the doubles points but were able to find success in singles. Marcela Lopez picked up a 6-0. 6-2 win in the No. 2 spot to start things off. Then, Kat Lyman picked up a 6-2, 6-1 win to put the Utes ahead 2-1 in the overall match. Sara Akid was next to finish where she picked up a 6-3, 6-3 win at the No. 6 spot. The match was clinched in an intense three-set match at No. 1 where Yuhan Liu picked up a 6-2, 2-6, 7-5 win. 

HEAD COACH RIC MORTERA
Ric Mortera is in his fifth season as the head coach of the Utah women's tennis program entering the 2024 spring slate. So far in his tenure he has accumulated a 56-50 overall record. In the 2022-23 season, under Coach Mortera's leadership, the Utes notched a 13-11 record and topped the ITA Mountain Region rankings. Highlights included their inaugural win against Cal and a remarkable triumph over No. 16 Washington, marking their highest-ranked victory in the Pac-12 era. Also during the 2023 season, Mortera led the Utes to the most Pac-12 wins since 2015. In the Fall 2023 slate, Mortera's squad found success in the ITA Regionals, with Emma Kamper staking claim to the singles B draw and Marcela Lopez claiming second in the singles main draw, sending her to nationals.

IN THE RANKS
The Utes are currently ranked No. 51 in the country, after falling to No. 31 Arizona State and No. 42 Arizona. Utah's Marcela Lopez and Ana Luiza Cruz are ranked No. 66 in the country in doubles.

SCOUTING COLORADO
The Buffaloes hold a 12-9 record overall, going 1-8  in conference play. Utah has faced Colorado on 16 previous accounts, and holds a 11-5 edge over the Buffaloes. The two programs last met last week, where the Utes claimed a 4-2 victory over the Buffs.

UTAH IN THE PAC-12 TOURNAMENT
Utah has never met with Colorado in the Pac-12 Tournament. The Utes have a 2-6 overall record in the Pac-12 Tournament and are looking for their first win since 2022.
