Bears Land 5 All-MPSF Selections

Apr 24, 2024

BERKELEY – Five California women's water polo student athletes were named to the various 2024 All-MPSF teams on Wednesday, including a conference-high three first-team selections.

Cal was the only MPSF school to garner multiple first-team honors, being represented by Isabel Williams, Maryn Dempsey and Elena Flynn. Maddie DeMattia and Mallory Reynoso earned All-MPSF Honorable Mention status. Flynn was also named to the All-Newcomer Team.

Williams – who last year became the first Cal goalkeeper with multiple first-team selections – makes the All-MPSF First Team for the third straight time. She heads into the postseason with career-best and conference-leading averages of 12.7 saves per game and a 66.8 save percentage, having reached double figures in 16 out of 20 games this season. Williams became the second player in program history to surpass the 800 career-save milestone in last Friday's 11-6 win at Stanford and has been named the MPSF Player of the Week three times this year.

Dempsey earns her third career conference honor while making her debut on the All-MPSF FIrst Team. The Murrieta native is the only Bear that has scored in every game this season, currently ranking second on the team with a career high 35 goals and four hat tricks. The team's top sprinter, Dempsey also ranks fifth during conference play with nine assists.

It's been a dream debut season for Flynn, who transferred to Cal last summer following back-to-back All-American seasons at UC Irvine. She was named the MPSF Player of the Week on Monday after putting away five goals – including four in the first half – in the win over Stanford. It was her team-leading fourth performance with at least four goals, giving her a Cal high of 38 on the year. Flynn was also named the MPSF Newcomer of the Week on March 12 after another four-goal game in a 9-8 upset win over then-No. 2 Hawaii. She also ranks fifth in the MPSF in field blocks with 11.

DeMattia ended the regular season with one of the most prolific stretches of her career, securing four multi-goal efforts in her last seven outings. The run includes a hat trick against No. 12 Indiana on March 16 and a career-high four-goal outburst against No. 19 San Jose State. DeMattia has recorded a career-best 40 earned exclusions this season, good for second in the conference.

Reynoso joins Flynn and DeMattia as first-time All-MPSF selections. A key starter on the defensive side of things, Reynoso ranks fifth in the MPSF with 11 field blocks for the year and second during conference play with five.

Cal begins the 2024 MPSF Championship in Bloomington, Indiana, at noon on Friday against San Jose State.
